Jim,

I had a similar experience with my OD solenoid. The OD stopped  
engaging and when the switch was on the fuel gauge dropped from full  
to one-half, indicating a high current drain. I could also smell smoke  
escaping the electrical system.  Replacing the solenoid fixed the  
problem.
