Paul -

Your battery may not be bad.  If the terminals are corroded, you won't
have a complete circuit and the car dies when you pull the jumpers.
That's be cause the jumpers are completing the circuit through the
other car's battery.

Take the battery cables off the battery and run a battery terminal
wire cleaner on the terminals and the cable clamps, and reattach.
Should fix your problem.  Very common problem with a car that isn't
driven much.
