My friend Peter Roses' BN6 had a similar problem. It turned out to be fried
wires inside the front wiring harness which
were making an internal connection. A way to test it would be to try to
start the car with the lights on instead of the
ignition. You should be able to start the car with the ignition in the off
position and the lights on.

The cure was to replace the wiring harness.
