A SWAG...  (Scientific, Wild Ass'ed Guess)

Any possibility of an unvented or clogged  tank cap?    As fuel is drawn 
from the tank a vacuum would be created that eventually the pumps could 
not overcome.   Variables would be the pump and how much fuel is in the 
tank yielding different distances to failure.

Bullet proof jacket on in case someone misses in shooting the theory down.
