I had one do the same thing.  Try drilling a small hole in the and removing
the "freeze plug" type cap and see if the press fit is turning under pressure.
I tack welded the square cable to the gear and it worked great! Replace the
cap and seal it with caulk or weld the hole shut.  Shawn Miller
