I have no data--crash test or otherwise--but I suspect given the 
location of the steering box (what, about a foot off the ground?) and 
the height of contemporary bumpers the steering box and column would be 
pushed down more than back in a head-on or rear-end collision.

Of course, that probably means the driver would do a serious face plant 
on the steering wheel.
