It sounds to me as though the master switch is faulty.
If you can manage to jam something heavy metal between the 2 big terminals
which effectively bypasses the switch you may be good to go.

Update: I let it sit awhile with the battery switch off. Now when I turn on
the battery switch, nothing works! Battery is a couple weeks old.
