i also still have original generator on my bj8. take it off every couple of years and replace bearing, clean armature, change brushes if needed, and clean up everything i can. so far, so good. since i cannot hear anything while driving, i do not need all that stuff like car phones, radio, etc., and i avoid driving at night. hjim
