[Healeys] why do the hoses need to cross?? BN4 and later.

Hi All.  I know the water hoses are supposed to cross on top of the
heater box for things to work.  I just don't understand why.  Is there a
check valve in the heater core or something??  Won't the water flow in
either direction??  What am I missing here??  Inquiring minds want to
know.....
