Bob, have had it happen to me to, the rubber ring actually seals pretty well 
on the canister style filter, but you need to make sure the cannister slips 
into its slot, you can tighten it down without the cannister seated in its 
slot, which is where the gasket should be, so first make sure the gasket is 
in there, and next tighten the cannister down until it is just on the lip of 
the housing, then jiggle or maneuver it so that it is in its slot, it should 
slide in a little (against the spring tension) now hold it in and tighten
 the bolt to make sure it stays where it is supposed to be.

 Certainly not as simple as a spin on, but is really not too hard once you 
get the hang of it.

You can get 3000 filters still at NAPA, it will come with the gasket, part 
number is on John Sims Healey 6 website,  I have half a dozen or so (rubber 
gasket rings) would be glad to send you one free, but maybe a
 lister closer could help as well (assuming you are on one of the coasts and 
not the midwest)
