[Healeys] rear fenders

G'day Brad

If you know anything about the history of when Austin-Healeys were being
built it becomes very clear that "one size doesn't fit all".

In many ways Jensen were very slaphazard with their construction methods and
the panels had to be significantly worked to fit each car. Even today panels
from one car will not necessary bolt straight on to another like model.

While we are very well looked after these days for repro parts it is still a
situation where "one size doesn't fit all".

Unless they are so far gone it always pays to have your own panels repaired
than to buy reproduced ones and then try and make them fit.

Brad -

As far as I am aware everyone's healey panels fit poorly. You are much
better off repairing your old panels, or buying good used ones (if you can
find them). The amount of rework on a new fender can easily cost more than
what it will cost to fix rust holes in your old fender.

I've seen the insanity on all LBC's - the local British car shop here in
Hong Kong has a '59 MGA - they had to replace a fiberglass fender that came
with the car so bought a new one... the amount of work that went in to
making it fit properly was insane... including building a 1/4" of weld on
the back of the fender so that the door gap would be correct as original...
scary!

Cheers,

Alan
