I do similar as Glen notes below, but I have also used non hardening blue Hylomar on the gasket surface that sits against the head.  I think that  I have had the same gasket on the valve cover for over 20 years.  The oil keeps the cork gasket in good shape

I use stock cork gaskets.</div>

Glue it to the rocker cover, glue, not RTV.</div>

Give it a nice even coat of Permatex Right Stuff, work it into the gasket surface a little, smooth it out & leave a light coating.</div>

Let it sit for around 15 minutes & starts to 'skin", put a thin wipe of oil on the head so the gasket doesn't adhere to the head surface, fit cover, done.</div>

The gasket is now part of the cover, it won't squish out, nor will it leak because it has a perfect seal against the head, & can be R&Rd many times w/o additional sealer.</div>
