Canepa is about 5 miles, as the crow flies, from me. For years I thought there was someone closer to me that had a few race cars, as I would hear repeated revs from them echoing through the mountains on occasion. A few years ago, I was in town and heard extremely loud revving, like a race car on a dyno. It was outside in the back parking lot at Canepa's. His Porsche 935 was being tested. It was then I realized all those revs through the years were coming from Canepa's. He must donated a lot of funds to local authorities to be allowed to make all that wonderful noise. </span>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;">Somewhat 1989 or 90 the Nissan GTP race cars were competing hard with the Joest Porsche 962.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;">Not too far away from my place lived a man I met from time to time – Hans-Dieter Dechent – who ran the Martini Le Mans racing team in the late 60ties early 70ties until he embezzled sponsor money from his own team to do private pleasure stuff, like helicopter skiing. (his words)</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;">He later joint the Joest team in USA as team organizer and so he met Kas Kastner several times, when Kas was at the track side to support his Nissan team.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;">Once the Nissan team ran into a technical problem, the alternator failed “again” and they were running out of spares. So Kas went over to Hans-Dieter and asked if he could borrow an alternator for the next race. Without hesitation Hans-Dieter went to the truck and pulled out an alternator and gave it to Kas. Kas team made the GTP car run and won the race.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;">Hans-Dieter added to that story that Reinhold Joest – the team owner – saw that Hans-Dieter gave away a spare to the worst opponent with the angry words: “How could you, we will have an easy win!”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;">Hans-Dieter replied: “We win on the track and not at the green table!”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;">Both are now some years in the Lap of the Gods.</span></p>
