There was a lot of play at the passenger side inner steering tie rod. So Ned and I drove the car back to the paddock for a look-see. Turns out the passenger side plastic bushing had turned into 3 or 4 pieces that were floating around in the steering boot. We pulled out the pieces and verified that they could be formed into a complete bushing so we knew there was nothing floating in there that could cause the steering to bind and went back to chat with Tivvy. He gave us a pass under the prevision that we'd replace the rack before Watkins Glen (which we did).<o:p></o:p></span></p></div><div><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Helvetica","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p></div><div><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Helvetica","sans-serif"'>So, in taking apart the unit completely, I can say the following: The quick racks are pretty fun for the street and autox. That said, they suck for racing. There is NO WAY to rebuild them. They are permanently joined inside the rack in other words, you can fix anything with shims and the plastic bushing fails somewhat easily and you can't get the rack apart to install a replacement bushing, even if such a part was available. If I was really convinced that a new rack was the only choice, I would engineer a replacement bushing that could be installed without removing the rack, but that possibility is way outside my skill set.<o:p></o:p></span></p></div><div><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Helvetica","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p></div><div><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Helvetica","sans-serif"'>There was also reports a long time ago about the tubes pulling apart from the pinion housing and Moss used to sell (I haven't checked for a while) a rack mount that "captured" the housing in such a way as to allow partial steering control if that separation occurred.<o:p></o:p></span></p></div><div><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Helvetica","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p></div><div><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Helvetica","sans-serif"'>My conclusion - used racks are still available as-are the inner tie rods and bushings / shims to set the end float to spec, so I strongly recommend that route. Sidebar: I use plastic tie wraps to secure the boots rather than the clamps and/'or wire tie that the stock setup uses and rather than filling the rack with oil, I grease the pinion and then apply a dallop of grease on the inner tie rod end once a year or so.
