This will result in premature wear if you're lucky. If you are not lucky, you'll overheat the diff and / or otherwise destroy it. Sometimes the noise can be from something really dumb, like the ring gear bolts backing out and you find out when one of the bolts wedge in the diff case with the resulting damage to everything.
