Hi Guys I just read an article in Runners World written by an
older woman; probably 60 or so. We used to chase PR's : Personal
Records. Now the author says she chases PV's; Personal Victories.
I once ran a 5K in 20:03 on my 51st birthday. 20 years ago. I'll
never come close to that time again but I still feel that
"finishing vertically" is a PV and accomplishment in a foot or
bike race. Even more so in a triathlon.

Same with the vintage racing: I'll never win a race but just
being out there with the other guys is still fun. Also skiing: 30
years ago I could ski with about anyone but took 25 years off.
Life kind of got in the way. Took up skiing again a couple years
ago: can't turn 'em like I used to but having fun. Name of the
game.

Cheers Bill

Making a car faster and better is also part of
the game. I'm surely not a slow driver but
admittedly not the fastest. I was 50 yrs old when I
started doing some car competition and I never took
race driving lessons, because I thought almost
nobody did that and because as amateurs I also
thought it was not completely righteous. I think
otherwise now about the driving lessons. But like
everyone who does compete in whatever sport, I want
to win (win races or classes or overtake the car in
front..). Winning feels good. For me,to win, I need
a car that is in good shape and just a little bit
faster than the opponent cars. Knowing that my car
is a bit faster makes my driving much better. When
my car is not in good shape, I wait for the finish
and I drive slower than I should. This approach has
worked very well for me. I was 2 times overall
championship winner of the german Triumph
Competition and British HTGT with also 8 overall
race wins. In the last 2 years I've been rather
slow, and with 68 yrs I wonder if it is the age, but
so far I refuse to believe that, so I'm taking some
race driving lessons with an instructor who is also
going to drive my car in the next race season. We
will share my car : each of us will do one race in a
week-end so we can compare our laptimes. If I stay a
lot slower than my instructor, I'll know it is time
for me to stop road racing. Investing in the car or
in the driver? Investing in more horsepower or in
better handling or braking? This is a wrong idea :
it is not about or/or/or... but about and/and/and.
