When my car is not in good shape, I wait for the finish and I drive slower than I should. This approach has worked very well for me. I was 2 times overall championship winner of the german Triumph Competition and British HTGT with also 8 overall race wins. In the last 2 years I've been rather slow, and with 68 yrs I wonder if it is the age, but so far I refuse to believe that, so I'm taking some race driving lessons with an instructor who is also going to drive my car in the next race season. We will share my car : each of us will do one race in a week-end so we can compare our laptimes. If I stay a lot slower than my instructor, I'll know it is time for me to stop road racing. Investing in the car or in the driver? Investing in more horsepower or in better handling or braking? I invest money in the driver. Taking lessons, buying books
about driving.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">In my opinion this is giving better results
than trying to squeeze 10 hp more out of an engine.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The most joy for me is to treat racing like
a chess play. You have about 30-40 cars on the track.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Some of them you can use for getting faster
others hinder you and then there is the car in front you want
to overtake.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">That is the greatest fun of all. Playing
games. Presenting yourself in mirrors, confuse them with false
attacks and stuff.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I’m not after winning, I’m going for a good
fight and don’t care much about final outcome. The fight is
the thing for me.</p>
