It looks like the gears got hot and melted. I have seen one do this at Road Atlanta after it lost fluid from a leaking seal and an ignorant owner who ignored all the little puddles in the paddock under the car after every session. The pinion gear melted and wore the shaft into a hourglass shape from the heat. The ring gear looked ok. I always use a 90 weight gear oil or heavier, up to 140 with a half can of STP. Never ran a break in period, just drove the car. Did you paint the gears after assembly and check the mess pattern? Did you use the Triumph set-up tools or guess at the clearances? Teethe usually break if they are not meshed correctly or the pinion pre-load is not enough and the gear gets a little wobble at speed. I use a few drops of ATF on the bearings when setting the pre-load and not heavy gear oil.</span></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10122" dir="ltr"><span><br></span></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10122" dir="ltr"><span>Barry</span></div><div class="qtdSeparateBR" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10123"><br><br></div><div class="yahoo_quoted" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10298" style="display: block;"> <div style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, Lucida Grande, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10297"> <div style="font-family: HelveticaNeue, Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, Lucida Grande, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10296"> <div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10295"> <font size="2" face="Arial" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10299"> <hr size="1" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10300"> <b><span style="font-weight:bold;">From:</span></b> van.mulders.marcel--- via Fot <fot@autox.team.net><br> <b><span style="font-weight: bold;">To:</span></b> fot <fot@autox.team.net> <br> <b><span style="font-weight: bold;">Sent:</span></b> Wednesday, September 5, 2018 12:06 PM<br> <b><span style="font-weight: bold;">Subject:</span></b> [Fot] Fwd: Crown and pinion gear break in<br> </font> </div> <div class="y_msg_container" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10610"><br><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10611"><br></div><div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10612">----- Doorgestuurd bericht -----<br></div><div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10613">Van: "van mulders marcel" <<a ymailto="mailto:van.mulders.marcel@telenet.be" href="mailto:van.mulders.marcel@telenet.be">van.mulders.marcel@telenet.be</a>><br></div><div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10614">Aan: "Greg Blake" <<a ymailto="mailto:gblake58tr3@icloud.com" href="mailto:gblake58tr3@icloud.com">gblake58tr3@icloud.com</a>><br></div><div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10615">Verzonden: Woensdag 5 september 2018 10:47:59<br></div><div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10616">Onderwerp: Re: [Fot] Crown and pinion gear break in<br></div><div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10617"><br></div><div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536174291851_10618">I think it is good measure to check the heat of the differential casing after a few laps when the pinion and crownwheel are freshly mounted : when the casing gets very hot, something is wrong : or the parts are bad or they are mounted not correctly<br></div><div dir="ltr">There are at least 2 manufactures of the TR parts, I forgot about the names.
