Triumph racers traveled far and wide to fill out the largest run-group in CSRG's David Love Memorial Races. One racer began his journey by nearly getting stuck in a Canadian snowdrift before finally arriving in California's wine country. Others came from as far as Iowa, Colorado and New Mexico. SoCal's own "E-Ticket Triumphs" showed up in force with their TR4s, 3s, and Spitfires.<br><br></span></div>

<br><div style="font-size: 12pt;">A discussion led by Indy 500 veteran and Hagerty Education Program spokesperson<br></div><div style="font-size: 12pt;">Lyn St. James highlighted the "Preserving the Jaguar Motorsport Heritage" panel. Group 44 founder/owner and racer Bob Tullius and former Jaguar North America president Mike Dale recounted their exploits and friendship that spanned the Jaguar/Group 44 E-Type successes through GTP dominance in IMSA and Group C competition. Dale, also the keynote speaker at the awards banquet finale, noted that in the 1980s Jaguar's U.S. sales had dropped from 70,000 units to just 3,000 annually. Asked how to fix it, his answer was "let's go auto racing."<br><br></div><div style="font-size: 12pt;">Anecdotes about the internal strife at Jaguar were interspersed with fascinating glimpses of their shared love of flying and vintage aircraft; Tullius owned and flew a WWII-era P-51 Mustang fighter, and Dale is currently building a World War I-era French Nieuport biplane. Tullius talked of his win in the first-ever Trans-Am race in a Dodge Dart as well as the challenges of delivering consistent performance in the face of rapidly changing technology.<br><br></div><div style="font-size: 12pt;">Next up were Le Mans winner Davy Jones and Jaguar restorer and vintage<br></div><div style="font-size: 12pt;">racer Brian Donovan. Ever the versatile driver, Jones shared his experience<br></div><div style="font-size: 12pt;">as a 14-year-old completing the Bertil Roos Drivng School and later his 2nd-place <br></div><div style="font-size: 12pt;">finish at Indianapolis in 1996 and outright win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans just two weeks later, in a Tom Walkinshaw Racing Jaguar prototype.<br><br></div><div style="font-size: 12pt;">Donovan, a former mechanical engineer, told of the passion for Jaguar cars that fueled his desire to compete in vintage racing. That love of the marque led to his formation of Donovan Motor Services in 1984.<br><br></div><div style="font-size: 12pt;">Both discussed the dichotomy of skills of vintage "weekend warriors" versus<br></div><div style="font-size: 12pt;">moonlighting professionals. Donovan explained that once he put professional drivers <br></div><div style="font-size: 12pt;">in his well-prepared E-Types, that he realized he was an amateur driver. After 19 years of driving his No. 62 E-Type racer, he hung up his helmet to focus on the innovative manufacturer-sponsored Jaguar Select Edition vintage racing team in the mid-2000s.<br><br></div><div style="font-size: 12pt;">In answer to an audience question about risking such valuable equipment on the <br></div><div style="font-size: 12pt;">track, Donovan echoed many of the vintage racing community's concerns regarding <br></div><div style="font-size: 12pt;">period authenticity and increasing the efforts of sanctioning bodies toward that end.<br><br></div><div style="margin-left: 360px; "><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><em>-- Reported by Scott Dames</em></span><br></div></td></tr></tbody></table>
