I'm curious who are you getting pistons
from?

I get mine from JE (I use the regular JE import car
piston for the spit, not the fancy JE Pros) They call a clearance
something like this for street use, and say you can run up to 4 or .0045 for
a race application. I always hone to .0055 to .006 clearance and have
never had a piston problem. You do get some scuffing with that much
clearance, but it has never been a problem. Running them too tight can
be a problem.

I have had several engine problems over the years
but never related to the pistons. (mostly valve issues due to me
insisting on designing my own cam profiles and valve train in hopes of
engineering myself to the back of the pack ;>)
