(1147 and 1296) These forged rods from China have been available for the TR3/4, TR6, GT6 and large journal Spitfire engines for a number of years, but up to this point, they have not been available for the small journal engines. I have used them in many of our street engine builds, closely checking every rod before installation. I usually find the rods are weight matched within 1 gram, the big ends measure in the middle of the tolerance range, and the small ends require just a slight hone for proper pin fit. For street and budget racing builds, these are a great alternative to reworking stock rods. I?ve discussed having a run of these made with the people at Maxpeeding, I would need to order a minimum of 10 sets: If there is interest, I could move forward with this, then offer them for sale for $575/set plus shipping from Ohio. These will be made from forged 4340 steel, and are a H-beam design with 5/16? ARP 2000 bolts included. If you are interested in a small journal version, please send me a message. Moldex quoted me $4500 for a ghost Main crank, so I am rethinking my crank sourcing. I last paid them $2700 in 2019. We shift at 6000 rpm so the billet main is, at that price, a luxury. Looking over my inventory, I have a number of usable cranks, but obviously want to lose as little material as possible in the remachining. I have an older crank in good condition, but it has the screws in the oil galleries instead of hex head plugs. Was there a significant upgrade in cranks when they switched gallery plugs? I don?t recall seeing anything about a preferred factory crank. It did its job and by my count it helped 6 drivers make the decision to get involved with vintage racing. As time went on we made the car faster by adding fuel injection and aero and raced with experienced drivers to great effect. Everyone had a great time but their focus was on their vintage car and last year we did not have enough of us older drivers to make a ChampCar entry work. The car sat all year but still starts right up! This year, we gave it one last try at getting enough drivers and we have a group of younger drivers and a couple of new drivers, so we have three races planned. The fact that COTA is turning itself into a private, high dollar, membership only club, and there is one last ChampCar race there in December gave people the impetus to sign up. After that,I think the end is near for my ChampCar program. Here's what I know. My Texas club recently updated our rules and added classes for 1985 cars. Other clubs have rules with cut off years that vary, but the reality of shrinking grids has hit vintage racing clubs and soon most will accept more modern cars. In the 1985 SCCA GCR and PCS car weights are reduced and fiberglass panels are allowable. Modern Fuel injection is clearly out, because almost all rules are based on the concept of "period correct". Triumph's fuel injection is allowed. The TR6 has a couple of build options, in Former CP, GT2C and former DP in GT3D. The PCS rules are almost identical but the car weight is substantially higher for GT3D. You'll want to ditch the bumpers and upgrade the camshaft and valve train, and most clubs want a period looking paint job. You can run dual SU's or Strombergs in GT3D, but you'll want Webers for GT2C. My car would need a lot of work for a vintage conversion, mostly because the bones are so bad. The body is very rough under the panels and the floors are literally road signs. It worked for Lemon's, WRL, and Chump/Champ, but the driveline is top notch. I'm not sure what I am going to do with it going forward but after this year I will make a decision. I may pull it apart and move the driveline into a street car. One option is for me to cannibalize the car for the other TR6-based vehicles (my 73 street car, the 2000 Mk. 1 sedan, a Hunter kit car, and a Jamaican kit car), but it turned out quite nicely (I was lucky enough to start with a fairly solid pile of "bitsa") and I hate to do that after 5 years building and prepping the car. The VDCA rules sound quite reasonable, and I don't think it would be too difficult to find four suitable fenders.? I originally got the engine running on a set of 175 CDs anyway, so they are sitting there ready to go.? Honestly, I'm not that worried about being "competitive", just would like to not be the slowest car on track by 5 seconds a lap (Lucky Dog experience last fall).? I am familiar with your car having checked out your cage in Pittsboro last year. I recall you were running Lucy Dog Racing. I cannot speak to the conversion, but fuel injection is permitted though not sure if it requires original equipment from "the day". So, I joined FOT and VDCA in 2024, have had a great time with the FOT members picking their brains. I highly recommend you try to visit VIR during the VDCA VIR WIld Hare Run, Fri-Sun, March 27-29. There, you can meet some of the FOT members and see their cars. https://www.motorsportreg.com/events/3E645049-BFBC-0EAA-FB81891B17AC42D6/status FOT members Chuck Gee, Henry Frye, Tony Drew, Phil Gott, Mark Wheatly, and Allen Goode are registered running their Triumph TR3s and 4s, mostly in Group 3 and a few others in Group 1 with Spitfires. There are no Triumphs this year in Group 8, which is what I ran in last year running against some Mustangs. I cannot make it this year and had to cancel my registration. But, I had a ball last year. I am considering running in SVRA in September, but VDCA is also running at CMP this year in September - not to far from Pittsboro. My TR6 is stored at VIR, so let me know if you would like to see it for ideas as well. I suspect your car will likely run in Group 8 for VDCA (and SVRA) depending on the modifications, possibly Group 3 if it is taken back to twin SUs/Strombergs. VDCA bases their classes and rules generally on SVRA groups. Though VDCA references SCCA vintage rules as well. My car has triple webers which kick it into Group 8 regardless. Below are some links as well as the SVRA specs for TR5-250-6 cars. Call me anytime and would be glad to share my experience. I will send you a text separately. Vintage run groups can be smaller than ChampCar. This can mean that you end up out on the track with no one to race with. I hate that! Hopefully you will find a group of cars to dice with. The good thing with a TR6 is that you can ramp it up or down to fit the need. Bob On Wed, 18 Mar 2026 at 08:40, Jamie Palmer wrote: > Bob, thanks for the valuable input.
