Hi Jeff,
TR3 and TR4 are basically the same, with slight and insignificant variations. TR4A is slightly different and improved.
TR4A has a horizontal/level flat with a number stamped just above the number 1 cylinder intake port. The number is 511695. It's easy to see. I think the latest TR4A heads also had aluminum push rod tubes. So some TR4A heads had steel tubes and later got aluminum. Other than that all 511695 stamped heads were the same.
The earlier heads had 3/8" exhaust valve stems and 5/16" intakes. TR4A had 5/16" stems on both intake and exhaust. I believe the early heads used 3 springs on the exhaust valve as well.
