Hi Chuck,
Here's my setup.  I plumbed the tank in place of the heater.  So it circulates through the tank and back through the water pump housing.
The out going line from the tank passes through the battery box and turns to use the original heater line bulkhead fitting.  
I have never had a cooling issue with this.  My radiator has no filler cap.  I fill the system through the tank.  I have a air bleed petcock on the t-stat housing.
