In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi all My experience is that if you are going to use one of these Nippon Denso derived alternators, you need to go for the OE part. The various copies all have short lives, mainly because the diode set lacks up and usually starts overcharging the battery and causing the output voltage to vary considerably, usually upwards. I?ve had this happen and it?s not pleasant when a dry cell battery gets fat enough to pop. You can buy diode sets for the original Denso units and these are a quick change ?in the field? so my view is to buy a decent one and a couple of spare diode packs (the assembly with the spade terminals on the end) and replace as necessary. I have one 80amp unit that?s done 10 years and is going back in after the current refit. I appreciate that most don?t need this sort of output, but it?s usually wet and dark here so it?s everything on. The smaller 45/50 amp units are probably longer lived. Hi all My experience is that if you are going to use one of these Nippon Denso derived alternators, you need to go for the OE part. I had to fab some brackets to make it fit, but it worked well. The first event I ran at Wendover went very well, I was pleased. The second event was a bit different. First race I was doing fine, getting passed bt the Mustangs and Corvettes and RX-7s as usual. I came to the hairpin before the main straight, hit the brakes and nothing happened. Well, it seemed the car doubled its speed when the brakes failed. I of course missed the hairpin entirely, and coasted along the concrete for quite a ways. Got back to the pits, popped the bonnet and immediately saw the problem. The single wire between the battery and the alternator had come undone from the alternator. The wire was tied to the chassis with a nylon tie a foot or two from the alternator. The O ring on the end of the wire had limited range of movement. What kept it from shorting out on the chassis was the brake line to the left front. It bounced around. Ever hear of EDM, electric discharge machining? Well, the wire was still attached to the battery on the other end. Every time the O ring bounced on the brake line, it sparked. And soon enough the sparks had eaten through the brake line, and all the fluid drained out of the system. No fluid, no brakes! mjb. When the battery discharges, the alternator will increase output to cover the discharge state, and current usage. So yes, yours is probably working as designed. As soon as electrons start being rearranged it drops to 12.9 and heads lower quickly. Race cars runniong total loss suffer from the low voltage of LA (lead acid) batteries under loads. Pertronics poops out, other stuff works marginally. The easy fix is a lithium battery. Not only are they much lighter, they also have a much flatter discharge curve and higher nominal voltage Li-ion is typically 14 V, Li FePO4 (caled LiFe geneerally) is 12.8. They work extremely well, last a very long time, and are zero maintenance other than charging them. Other than in endurance races opr an time you need lights I think alternators in race cars are nothing but trouble, take horsepower to turn, have belts, and die at lousy times. Other than that they?re great. > On May 20, 2025, at 3:35?AM, Rich Hahn via Fot wrote: > > Had the same thing happen to me at Put In Bay with my braided clutch line!! The club went to Steamboat Springs from Utah. Unfortunately Karen and I were not in a British car, but my Pathfinder. I have GOT to get a car on the road this summer. An interesting occurance happened in Steamboat. Sems some fellow was downtown, and he saw the line of British cars motoring by. He tracked us down to a burger place, and said hello. Turns out he was a racer, piloting a Porsche back in 1962, '63 back east, primarily Lime Rock. His name was, uh, I forgot his first name, but remember his last name was Hanger. Or maybe Hangar, as in airplane. No, his first name was NOT Cliff. Might have to try and look him up in some old SCCA records or some such. A few of us took a look at his *beautiful* Morgan Plus 8 he bought new in 1991. Lovely car! Anyway, will get to the new list additions soon. mjb. So, in over 10 years of racing my GT6, I have never sheared a stub axle (just jinxed myself). The engine puts out about 200 hp. That said, I know others who have had this problem repeatedly. They finally gave up and installed a Subaru differential. I?m really not sure what differentiated my outcome from theirs. I?ve run mostly a welded diff but also a limited slip. I?d suggest the following: Pick up a handful of stub axles and get them all crack tested. I don?t mean with dye- take them somewhere that can magnaflux them . Secondly, you might try getting them cryogenically treated. I just had two sets treated that way, along with the ring and pinion - those I have had repeated failures on. Let us know what you figure out!
