The car was built for autocross by a guy in Indiana who knew his stuff. However, I bought it from a guy who had bought it to run PIB, but knew nothing about race engines. He had run it lean and holed #4. He told me he had not changed anything, but that is turning out not to be the case. (I suspect it holed the piston because I found he had fitted gros jets with the float level way too low). I rebuilt it to same mechanical spec. It ran great but a little lean on the AAU needles for road course, so I?m now on AAA. It still runs great, unless it doesn?t ?. The car has had this issue since I built it. At first I thought the obvious - float heights, needle/seat, regulator pressure etc etc but while it always runs great I have this issues after a few ?laps?. 2) The car had a Summit racing 3136 pump which has around 90GPH and an internal blow off at 7PSI, my regulator is at 4 PSI. Today I had taken the pump apart and checked it but all looked OK. I fitted a cheap solenoid pump in its place. Issue still there. I had checked both the Summit and now the solenoid pump for flow, there is plenty. As I noted the float bowls are full when it quits running. 3) Great point - could be what I have. I know the fuel level in the jets is fine when not running, but a poor flow from bowl to jet would change that when running. My O2 is in the collector, so I can?t be sure if it?s both carbs or just one. All 4 plugs look very similar, but that is possible as this ?lean? condition is only for a few cycles before it stops - not enough to color the plug. Will check when I can ( unfortunately a busy weekend coming up as I race sailboats too ). I?ve been thinking it is heat related, but it could just as easily be time. When I tried to run autocross it started to play up after 10 or so seconds of full throttle (which I can?t do in my yard). On autocross it would pull like crazy, then go very flat, and then come back on, repeat. Your idea would do just that ! 4) always worth a check, but it would have to be something that shows up only when hot. 5) yes, compression good. Between 220 and 225 for all, measured on crank with throttles open. Thanks also to the other responses that I received, I didn?t cc all on my replies in order to reduce the clutter? Hi Andrew, a couple of things to check. 1st, is this a new problem? if so, what did you touch last? 2d Verify fuel flow, not just pressure i.e Gallons per hour? Disconnect the fuel line at the carbs, and stick it into a 1 quart or one gallon clean/clear bottle/jug. Turn the fuel pump on and time how long it takes to fill (1 Qt/ 1Gal whatever size container you're using). If you're getting more than 20 gallons per hour, the flow is OK. Set the bottle aside and let it settle out, look for particles, rubber, fuel cell foam, dirt. If so, see where that's coming from. For example, old fuel cell foam will break down and clog the intake. When the pump turns off, the fuel in the lines drops back flushing the intake clear until next time. Fuel filter clean? Fuel pressure reg OK? Not just holding pressure (I run 3.5 on my HS4s) but actually sending fuel down the line? The gallons per hour test will indicate if you need to look into any of these areas, if you're gelling enough fuel, more down the list for now. link to flow and fuel requirements chart https://historicracinggroup.com/resources/Reference_Material/Canton/Fuel%20Consumption%20and%20Flow%20Quick%20Ref%20by%20CM%20Filters.pdf 3. A problem I had with an identical set up, was rubber hose breaking down and settling into the little box shaped well in the carb bowl where the line to the jet connects. It's happened to me twice now, last time was in June with fairly new hose feeding the carbs. It restricted the flow to the jet, even though the bowl was full. At high load, not enough fuel could get past the blockage. 4. Vacuum leak- Is there a crack or loose bolt on the intake manifold? With the engine running, spray carb cleaner around the manifold to block, carbs to manifold. A change in engine RPM means something was drawn in through a gap. 5. Compression check- Are all the cylinders within 5-10% of each other? I?m running it without the hood for these test runs. It always stops at the entry to a turn. I?ve been working on it a lot, so know it has fuel pressure, and the float bowls are full of fuel. All plugs look very similar. The needles (AAA) are the spring type, and the slides move freely. I use ATF as fluid, but have tried 50 weight too. After a minute or so it will fire back up, but only run enough to get back to the shop before going lean again. If I pull out the choke it will run, but is unstable. I have wrapped headers and a heat shield around the carbs but they do still get hot. Any ideas ? Thinking to try some less volatile fuel as it seems heat related and the Sunoco evaporates so fast ! We had a fabulous weekend, and our Triumph drivers did us proud. I am looking forward to working with Paul King and Skip Barber to make next year's Kastner Cup weekend an event to remember! Stay tuned for the details, but plan now on coming to the northwest hills of Connecticut next Labor Day weekend! Ready to see what Triumph torque is capable of at Lime Rock Park? https://youtu.be/_VK7GJS2of4 More great news, we are working with our good friend Jim Dolan and the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix folks on adding a great feature for us, a Triumph/MG Challenge race! The PVGP hosts a race weekend at PittRace, a world class track just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the site of the Kastner Cup races in both 2018 and 2022. More details to follow as we work out the small stuff, Marty Sukey will be heading the charge for us. But the basics are in place, we will run with our regular run groups, plus get at least one, possibly two extra sessions to race for bragging rights against our MG friends! Assuming we get the support we expect, this should become an annual feature of this great event. More track time for no extra entry fee at a premier track, it doesn't get any better than that! They were all excellent good close battle races. First one (Saturday PM group 2 Sprint Race) was an epic battle with Nathan Burress in his black bugeye sprite.? He's upped his motor prep, and is a fierce competitor now.? The last lap we did about half of it side by side.? Big delay on the grid with my cameras running, so the batteries died on the last lap.? Rear died around the Kink area, front one died about 20 car lengths before finish of the race.? Bonus footage from Dave Amys who was following us and ended up 3 wide with us at the end. https://youtu.be/hfKj-W-pZeI Second one (Sunday AM group 2 Feature Race) was a good battle with Dave Amys.? Near the end I dropped two wheels off at the exit of the Kink trying to catch Dave, luckily nothing bad occurred (that's a good spot to write off a race car).? Dave bested me in the end, we both set best lap times of the weekend in this one - Dave ran a 2.52.xx, I did a 2.53.xx. https://youtu.be/CrsL8rWilpk Last one (Sunday PM Founders Tribute), was an epic battle with Dave Amys.? I counted 12 passes between the two of us. Unfortunately Dave's tranny bit the dust 1.5 laps from the end. There was a huge grid, but at 4:25 pm on Sunday most had left.? I was gridded like 48th but started on the 3rd row.? Awesome awesome battle, lots of side by side action, drafting, cross overs, just good hard clean racing.? Dave is a quick learner and getting harder and harder to beat. https://youtu.be/GUnOfysE02A Cheers, Tony Drews From dbm.spitfire at gmail.com Sat Sep 21 06:37:44 2024 From: dbm.spitfire at gmail.com (Doug Mitchell) Date: Sat, 21 Sep 2024 08:37:44 -0400 Subject: [Fot] New Member Message-ID: Amici, I currently at the Empire, Michigan Hill Climb. Do the aluminum "washers" hold up or do they creep over time, reducing the clamping load and allowing it to slip? Does anyone have a suggestion for the torque spec on the 6 Allen headed cap screws (no specs given with the sprocket) or the hub to cam (book says 24 - 26 ft lbs). Should I assemble this Loctite between the hub and sprocket to keep it from slipping? Or should I send this back and get a more robust unit? ?If so, where can I get a better one? Thanks! If so, that's very similar to the powertune venier sprockets for the 6 cylinder engines. I've used them a few times without issues, although the Goodparts option with 5/16 bolts is much more confidence inspiring on a race engine. Man, those other cars are faster than in 1963! And good drivers too! Here are some pictures of my set up. Is there a link to post directly to the group in the future and see questions or comments? Thanks! The Blower is an Eaton M-45? I think, possibly off of a t-Bird? with a snout machined to fit this engine. I think it makes about 8lb. but it is hard to watch the gauge and drive hard at the same time. Maybe I can film it sometime. There is an MSD boost timing control installed with the MSD 6AL, which should retard the timing under boost and reduce detonation. There is also a methanol/water injection system that sprays the 50/50 mix into the Weber 40 DCOE air cleaner under boost - also to discourage detonation. Its hard to test what they actually do?.So far I have only blown one head gasket and that was at a track day a number of years ago.? The serpentine belt arrangement was constructed from various junkyard parts and fabricated brackets. I fabricated the simple intake manifold from rectangular tubing with a primitive pop off valve at the front. The compression was not modified. This setup has been installed for about 15 years. 87mm pistons. Oh yes also had to modify the radiator and hoses to avoid the pulleys etc. Hope this helps. Cheers.
