I wanted to get this out there as soon as possible, as you can see by the email below we have reached out to SVRA and gotten a very favorable response. I am setting up a phone call with Matt Rose later today to work out the details. I am confident the outcome will be if a racer does not run with SVRA on a regular basis, they will issue a tech sticker with a notation in your logbook giving you a one-time exemption. If you regularly attend SVRA events, you will undoubtedly be required to install a fire system that complies sooner rather than later. Has anybody planning on running the KCup in Sonoma already run an SVRA event and claimed their one-time exemption for the fire suppression system but still not complied? If so, it would be helpful to know who you are before my chat with Matt. Please email me your details off-list so we can get in front of this. If nobody falls into this category I expect my conversation with Matt will go pretty smoothly! More details as they become available, but the bottom line is don't let your lack of a complying fire system discourage you from running! He could not have been more accommodating. I was assured that any Triumph that comes to Sonoma with a non-conforming fire suppression system will be able to run. He talked to Rob Elson, Technical Director for SVRA, and they agreed, we will not have an issue with the new fire suppression rules. Matt gave us his cell phone number, if anybody has a problem with tech, he wants to know so he can make it right. Bottom line, bring a safe car prepared to your home club rules and let's put on a great show! He told me one of his first events as Chief Steward was our Portland KCup in 2021, he really enjoyed having us there, and he is looking forward to us coming back to one of his events. He went on to say he will be Chief Steward for both Sonoma and Laguna Seca, apologized again for the last-minute date change for Laguna Seca, (out of their control) and said if we have any racers want to run both there is secure storage at Sonoma for race rigs, and again, don't worry about fire suppression rules for Laguna Seca either. Our registration numbers could use a boost, guys. If you are planning on running, please do so soon! I do. I got there late Thursday night and discovered Friday morning I had destroyed one of my trailer axles. I managed to find an axle in Topeka. Only after I was laying under the trailer on Saturday between races putting it in that the spring perches were wrong and I said out loud ? great, now I need a welder, a torch and a grinder all the time thinking I was pretty screwed. I heard one of the spectators standing next to the car say ? I have all of that, I?ll be right back?. Sure enough he was in less than an hour. I moved the spring perches where they needed to be and continued on. Great folks in Topeka. That has to be factored in. That said, an IRS rear end will almost always grip better than a live axle with or without a LSD. Overly stiff rear sway bars is usually the culprit. I run 3/4" on mine. Sorry I've been behind this year because of a busy work schedule, but I am concentrating on the Kastner Cup now. 1. Hotel Nearest Sonoma Raceway. We have a hotel block near the track for up to four day (W-Sat Night). Just book the days you need of course using the discount code on the attached flyer. Book it as soon as you can. A number of Triumph club folks are staying at this hotel, as well as Hardy Prentice. But I've also attached a list of hotels in Petaluma which is bit further away from the tract (say 20 minutes). 2. Tees. This year we'll have Tee Shirts available at the track. Let me know if you'd like to reserve one. 3. Poster. Joe will be selling the 2024 poster (attached). Also, I want to thank Gasket Works (Mordy Dunst), Good Parts, Moss, VTR, and TWOA for stepping up and being sponsors this year. Sponsorships help us run the event without charging drivers extra money. Mordy is paying to host a retirement party for Jerry Barker on Thursday, and Huffaker Engineering is hosting our Friday evening social. Thanks! Hardy's racing efforts were truly amazing. Beside fame and notoriety from all of his wins and towing with an E-type, I wonder how many road racing competitors, world wide, raced essentially the same car in regional and national competition for over 25 years. If his first autocross competition in '65 is included, which he won, minus 14 months of military service, that's just about 32 years running the same car. Amazing. As many of you may be aware, the registrations by Triumph drivers is very low this year. We only have a dozen cars to date. But significantly, SVRA has committed that the Kastner Cup will run as a separate run group throughout the weekend regardless of the car count. This includes the Kastner Cup race on Saturday, and a KC Reunion race on Sunday. Most cars will also be able to run in their regular run group as well as the Kastner Cup. There is a conflict with Triumphs that may run in Group 8 but we have asked for a schedule adjustment and we should know what changes they can make by next week. Bottom line is that we will have 30 minute races both Saturday and Sunday. Also important is that the test day includes three 30 sessions; 1.5 hours total on track. Sonoma has a brand new race surface this year, so it will be interesting to find out how that impacts lap times. I also want to confirm what Henry Frye wrote recently that the new fire supression system requirements will not be enforced until next year. Regarding tires, the Kastner Cup is open. Since we don't have any special tire limitations, just run on what you have in the past or what you may want to try out this year. However, if you're running slick tires for example, you will not be eligible for a points/podium finish in your regular run group; but that will not impact your Kastner Cup results. So I ask this question; who is going to win the two Kastner Cup races in 2024? While our Grand Marshall Hardy Prentice will select the Kastner Cup Trophy Winner, the field is wide open for race podium finishes without the 250k or TR8's running. I think its stacking up to be an outstanding weekend with lots of track time and unknown race results. I hope you'll consider joining in the fun if you're not registered yet. Thanks. There used to be a couple of models that worked well and looked OK in our cars, but 10 years ago when I bought the seat for my TR3 I found only one that fit the bill. I seem to remember it was the Series 38. https://www.kirkeyracing.com/category/Series38/38-Series-Standard-10-to-20-Layback Figure a little over $500 for the seat and cover from Summit Racing. When choosing a seat, you want one that holds your butt and torso firmly when strapped in, and since you will be sharing the car with multiple drivers that may turn out to be a compromise. The seats come in different widths, and it really helps to have both you and the son-in-law sit in the a couple to verify the fit. Hopefully you will find one that is not too snug for one and not too loose for the other. If you run into trouble, remember you can always fabricate a foam insert (or just stuff some foam in the right places) to take up excess room for the smaller of the two drivers. The seat needs to be attached to some real structure under the car, I welded brackets off the frame to give me real steel to bolt to, same for the belts. A pretty easy task on a TR3, the frame is pretty close to where the bolts came through the floor on Old Blue. Just using big fender washers under the sheet metal floor is not the best way to go, especially considering the 60 year old sheet metal. Good luck, and I hope you guys make it to the Kastner Cup! I really like the Kirkey Vintage seat in my car. It's appropriate without a built-in headrest because my roll bar has one. Either way, Kirkey is good quality, strong, safe and economical. I like the snap-in cover too. You can add padding where needed. You might consider a TR4A or TR6 adjustable track to for mounting if you need one.
