I had a wonderful 3B but am now seriously thinking of a 4 or 4A or a 6. Does anyone have a nice example of a 4, 4A or a 6 driver (not looking for a concourse trailer Queen - I want to DRIVE it) they would want to swap for an ?18 M240ix (37,000 miles)? We could have them both appraised and make up the difference with cash. Just thinking? Our Group 2 guys were in the top Five for all the races. Truth be told, it was Dave Amys as our # 1 rep for the Triumph Badge. Dave Nipped at at heals of an overall win for the Big Show?. so close! Unfortunately- at the entry to turn six? the track is not quite wide enough for 4 cars. Lack of Roadway width left Dave as an impressive runner up to the Red Alfa in the group 2 feature race. Super exciting to watch. On endurance; it was, of course Tony Drews? who finished every single one one of the damn exhausting weekend?s races(5) and 2 practices and 3 qualifying sessions. Mark Fisher deserves a big shout out! for bringing to life a car, a dream, and the legacy of a great old Triumph Pal of mine - Glade Snodgrass. Glade passed on a couple years back. Jason came down strongly in favor of welded, others had different opinions. I ended up buying a Gripper limited slip unit out of england and put it in (clutch type). I?m very pleased with the unit - I told them how I use the car, approx HP, tires, and they basically set it up for maximum pressure. I can push the car around the paddock more easily, but I?m getting no inside wheel spin in corners, no matter what corner or speed, so that seems good. Lap Times - the real test. I ran last year with the welded unit at both Summit Point and Lime Rock. My best time at Summit was a 1:30.8 in 2023, at Lime Rock it was a 1:07.2 Last year the engine was freshly rebuilt over ?22-?23 winter. Tires were new Speedsters for Summit Point, slightly less new by the time I got to Lime Rock. This year my best time at Summit was a 1:30.3, Lime Rock 1:07.9. Engine is the same, probably somewhat tired after six race weekends (I?m actually pulling it now to change rod bearings). Tires (speedsters) were fresh for Summit again this year. Conclusion? The driving style is definitely different, and I feel like I can place the car more precisely with the LS. I think it helps me a bit with speed in the Carousel at Summit. However, there appears to be no big difference in lap times. If I?d been consistently faster at both tracks I?d make more of a case for it, but that was not the clear outcome. However, the lack of a fresh engine this year is probably good for something. It will get a full rebuild or an alternate new engine for next year and the east coast Kastner cup, so we?ll see what that data shows. The jury is still out, but right now, I?m not making a strong case for spending $1,100 for the LS. It?s fine, but not apparently inherently superior by much of a margin. I like turning the car into the turns, rather than throwing it in to get the rear sliding like I did with the welded unit, but I can adapt either way. I do like the Gripper, it has seamless engagement, seems to be excellent quality, no wheel spin like I hear from Quaiffe users. BTW, I did have to get out the air grinder and do some minor clearancing on the diff housing. It?s a tight fit, and there was minor interference with bolt heads and the circumference of the diff. I certainly enjoy hearing about the comparison. I would think the limited slip would be easier on the drive train. -the welded diff has a big disadvantage of being damaged easily by rough shifting and abrupt take offs and sudden starts. One poor move can break it. Sounds like your setup is working good and that?s all that matters. Thanks for sharing. I have had a Gripper in the TR3 for the last 10 years. No need to rebuild so far despite the many track, hillclimb and fast motorway and smaller roads driving miles. Very smooth and you can set it up the way you need/like. One additional benefit : there is no friction material on the plates (as the usual Salisbury have), so the wear is very limited. Had I had a Salisbury I would have replaced the plates a few times already. A presto ! More than you wanted to know!!! Scott -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I switched over two years ago and lap times are really similar but driving (and pushing it around the paddock) are really much easier. I looked at videos from the same track and I'm working harder to keep the car where I want it with the welded diff. More steering angle = more scrubbed off speed. This weekend I was at Thompson with a fresh engine and I started getting wheel spin on a few corners, which never happened with the welded diff. Very hot track, more torque, old tires, probably a combination of both but the net result after it happened a few times and I realized what as going on, I adjusted to it and put in lap times the same as Russ Moore's old Spit, basically the sister car to mine but with an open diff. Jim, in that car, was getting wheel spin as well but I think he said in more spots. Quaife for a Spitfire (no clutches to adjust either, just install and drive) on sale now $893 + shipping directly from Quaife. Install was straight forward in a GT6 housing with a little grinding of the back of a bearing race to shim properly. Would I do it again? Probably yes, for the same reason I went to a billet crank. No performance improvement but I think more reliability and less stress on the hardware. mike h On Fri, Jun 21, 2024 at 1:40?PM Alexandre Camoletti via Fot < fot at autox.team.net> wrote: > Thanks Scott for sharing in detail, most interesting ! > > I have had a Gripper in the TR3 for the last 10 years. In my opinion, VARAC has turned this race into the premier North American Vintage Racing event of the season. They have built this event into the most enjoyable, low key festival event imaginable. Can you name another event that puts on a dinner and live music every night, including the load-in on Wednesday? Yes, that's 4 nights of food and entertainment, which includes free beer every night! Canadian hospitality can't be beat, want to load in on Wednesday and not run the test day, no problem. Want to stay over Sunday night and get a fresh start at your drive home Monday morning? No problem. Mosport is a bucket list track that is worth the tow from just about anywhere, and you are treated to 8 sessions over 3 days. Much to the chagrin of the VARAC's race director and MG pilot Dave Good, a Triumph won the annual MG/TR Challenge, again. We have a bit of a streak going here. I didn't get a qualifying time because of a minor suspension snafu, so I started from a grid position of 27th. Unfortunately, my good friend and on-track nemesis Nick Pratt broke in Practice, so I didn't have the blue Midget to play with. When the green flag flew I saw a hole and it felt like I got by half the field before turn 1, then on lap 2 I motored by the leaders on the back straight to take the lead and run uncontested. Mike Moore took second spot on the podium with a great run in his TR4. In the Porsche vs. the rest of the world "All Comers" race, I did my part keeping the podium Porsche-free by running third overall. VARAC runs what is best described as bracket racing, you pick the lap time you are comfortable with and that is where you are scored. I just happen to have a car that runs towards the top of the Over-1:40 bracket, and I took the top podium spot for VH3. Yup, a good weekend for the yellow TR250. Mike Deweerd ran the ex-Peter Bulkowski TR8, and with every session more and more seconds fell off the lap times. Once Mike gets a handle on this beast, watch out! He was two-timing it, with his faithful Green Bean TR4 running with Vintage Historic grid and the TR8 joining the Classic grid. Peter came to offer support and encouragement, and it is always a good time when Peter is around! This was Jason Sukey's first outing at the storied Grand Prix track, and he confidently shaved seconds off every session as well, looking awesome in his GT6 in the Sunday morning race. Dad Marty's Spitfire didn't fare quite as well, but he was all smiles as usual all weekend. Brian Schirano joined the fun and ran well with his GT6, as did Stewart Wigg rounding out the GT6 contingent. Tim Slater towed his Spitfire up from rain ravaged South Florida with his dingy strapped on the second story of his trailer, (not a joke) and ran as strong as a mortal Spitfire can go. Mark Wheatley didn't have the weekend he had hoped for with his TR4, but in the feature race on Sunday afternoon we are pretty confident the issue has been identified. The sole sidescreen car at the event was John Styduhar with his TR3B, John ran strong all weekend never missing a beat. Mike Moore convinced himself he had enough grip on old tires to not put his new ones on, but after spinning in the very high speed turn 8 he realized that was not the way to go! No harm, no foul, and hopefully lesson learned! Mike ran well when all wheels were pointing the right way, he also had a great weekend. It seems every year we get more Americans to venture north across the border to race with us, and every one of them that races this event assures me they have put the VARAC Vintage Grand Prix on their permanent race schedule! To me, the Mosport experience is what I gauge all other tracks by, and to have VARAC put on such an amazing event at a world class track, it just doesn't get any better than this! This was our second visit to Mosport because of all the reasons you stated , the challenging hairy chested track, a very friendly race group, and of course the nightly entertainment , food and beer. Our 1962 1147cc Spitfire ran well all weekend , handled well but could use a few more horses up that long uphill Andretti straight The VH4/5 group had two red flagged races unfortunately due to roll overs . In the fast turn 3 I was on the inside of a GT6 when a Mazda RX3 lost it and hit the inside wall hard right in front of me , launched into the air literally feet from my head at one point . See the attached pics on this code brown moment ! . The driver was not injured but it was a stark reminder that our sport can be dangerous and never skimp on safety . I am the current caretaker of Red 14, now #146. When I purchased it, I knew when I called Bob to discuss the particulars of picking up the car I made the right choice.? He was so pleased I was coming to get it in person so he could "introduce me to the car".? What could have been a 30-minute transaction turned into a shop tour and a 2-hour dinner at their favorite Mexican restaurant. I was then invited to return to Texas to complete my drivers' school and Bob was there to explain everything he did with the car in between races and while I was on track he sat with my wife cheering me on and explaining everything to her.? When I was promoted into the regular race group Bob couldn't get the tape out fast enough to put the X on the car. I will miss sending him updates on the car.? The world has lost a good man.
