Sounds like a variation of the time-honored mechanics spit-test, spit on a finger & touch each tube, look for cool tube, should get a nice sizzle & boil right off.(caution may cause burning & discomfort if used improperly)

Jim Ray gave a “tech session” At our VTR Nationals in Galveston 2012. He showed old race photos and told stories. The one I remember:
Jim was in a Spitfire during the pace lap of the runoffs when he developed a mis. Kas was managing the competing team, but heard the Triumph running rough and grabbed a spark plug and wrench.  When Jim pulled in the hot pit Kas stepped in front of the car (having never met Jim before). Kas told Jim to stay strapped in and shut off the engine. Kas popped the hood, licked his hand, and pulled each spark plug wire and touched each plug until he found the one that wasn’t hot. Swapped the plug and sent Jim back out down only half a lap.
That was the best “Tech session” I ever attended, hearing old war stories from the glory days.

Gary BrizendineCrew, 72 D Production. The TR6.Saturday afternoon, Regional Race, the LR cast aluminum lower trailing arm of Jim Ray's TR6 broke. Uh, not something that was in the spare parts bin.A fellow from Houston that had driven his street car, a TR6, had wandered by several times Saturday morning. Right after the wrecker had deposited the now lame race car by our bus, the fellow hustled up to see what was the matter.....I immediately asked him, where is your car?His car? Yes, your car. He pointed toward the area outside of the Paddock. He said way down there....I said, let's go get your car. Hua? Yes, we need to go get your car and bring it in the Paddock, right here. Why?Because I'm going to take the rear trailing arm off of your car and put it on the crippled race car.He was dumb-struck.How can I get home if you disassemble my car?I handed him the keys to Jim Ray's own 911S. You drive this car until the Dealer in Houston reassembles and fully services your TR6....I did the R&R on the racecar using the donor control arm. Compressed the coil spring on the street car using about 25 worm-drive hose clamps.....Nobody wanted to stand around to watch THAT!Rebuild done before dark....Jim won the National the next day....The owner of the donor got his car put back and a bunch of little service items done by the Dealer in Houston.Don't you know getting out of the 911 an back into his TR6 was a let down!
When Gary saw me racing the TR6 I bought from Sam Halkias he encouraged me to rebuild it as a Jim Ray replica. I can't bring myself to modify that car but the Ray TR6 was an awesome looking car.<image.png>
