The 3 and 6 ones were bought from fume7650 on ebay, and we've been very happy with them. Raced the Kastner cup at RA last year with both cars and had no issues. Cooling has never been a problem, welds look a heck of a lot better than I can do, and the cost is great. Has anyone ever obtained a Golf Cart to rent at either/both Sonoma and Laguna Seca? It is turning into a HUGE runaround. Both vendor for Sonoma and Laguna require, as part of the rental, that we obtain a $1,000,000 General Liability policy and supply them with the documentation showing we have such a policy. The Company that Sonoma referred me, named Thimble, to for this type policy said they don't do it and referred me to a "Partner" Company named Tivly that does. Called them and they in turn referred me to a company, Ideal Insurance Agency, that I have emailed but never heard back from For Laguna Seca the company they referred me to, K and K Insurance, I sent them this question... "You were recommended as a vendor to obtain a Comprehensive General Liability, Bodily Injury and Property Damage, combined single amount of 1,000,000 as part of the rental agreement on some Golf Carts for an event at Laguna Seca. We would also need the same type policy for an event at Sonoma Raceway" They replied back with an application for a policy as if I wanted to host an event. Questions like have we have ever done an event like this, will it be open to the public, number and age of the participants, etc... I developed a coolant leak that we couldn't track down at the track. I'd go about 5 laps at full chat and then the cooling system would push enough coolant to get an air bubble and then I'd see the temp gauge indicating a problem and would pull in. Even so, I had a great time. The track is awesome and we got to hang around with FOT friends old and new. But it was really kool hanging around with the usual suspects as well as Dean Tetterton, John Harkness and some new faces like Mark Cook. It'll be fun to see some more TR6's on track in the coming years. I manged to get down to a 2:20.8xx which was my target time. Henry Frye got into the 2:18's during the morning race on SAT. Speaking of which, had I not seen my temp problems, I probably would have had a a podium finish with the Group 3 race. I was in 2nd overall for the first 4 laps, I think. Too bad that video didn't come out. That said, even running a distant second, I was still racing on the same track as Denny Wilson. Given that you never know if the casting of your head is thin at some location it is better to start on the conservative side. Better to leave a little power for next time than ruin a head you have lots of work in. I say this because there is far more power in the valves and porting than a .010 cut off the head for more compression. So be sure to check the head height in case they head had previously been shaved. When the head casting was changed to include a diagonal flat section on the underside of the lower thermostat housing the thickness of metal between the bottom of the head and the internal water passages was increased. So I suggest not shaving the earlier heads with rounded lower thermostat housing beyond surfacing shaves. > *From: *Tony Drews via Fot > *Sent: *Saturday, April 6, 2024 1:50 PM > *To: *GREGORY THOMPSON ; FOT Triumph > > *Subject: *Re: [Fot] TR4 head milling > > Working with my dad (uncle jack) we considered 0.130 to 0.150 "normal" > to mill, 0.190 to be where it started to get dangerous.? That said, even running a distant second, I was still racing on the same track as Denny Wilson. > > At any rate, I posted a video from the Friday afternoon practice / qualifier: > > VIR Hot Laps > > > > Check it out. > > C ya, > Bob Lang > > > _______________________________________________ > fot at autox.team.net > > http://www.fot-racing.com > > Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html > Archive: http://autox.team.net/archive http://www.team.net/pipermail/fot > Unsubscribe/Manage: http://autox.team.net/mailman/options/fot/terrysopher at gmail.com > > From ponobill at gmail.com Mon Apr 8 11:49:02 2024 From: ponobill at gmail.com (Ponostyle) Date: Mon, 8 Apr 2024 07:49:02 -1000 Subject: [Fot] VIR Wild Hare 2024 In-Reply-To: References: <8e725c6726c48bcbd427894eef4ee86b@tr4racer.com> Message-ID: Henry, Henry have you learned nothing? Paul is currently VP of the Triumph Club of the Carolinas (based in Raleigh, NC). He used to race his TR6 in the past, but now works on them for other Triumph enthusiast. Also, he is very involved in other aspects of racing which he could better elaborate and share. Paul is currently involved with a project to bring a support race over from the UK to the US for Operation Motorsport (https://operationmotorsport.org/). I mentioned the possibility of the Kastner Cup being run at VIR, and he is very interested in helping with that effort as much as possible. Would appreciate adding Paul to the list. We have 16 cars signed up at this time. The Kastner Cup will have its own race group throughout the weekend, with two feature races; the traditional Saturday Kastner Cup race followed by the awards, then the Kastner Cup Reunion race on Sunday, just after the lunch break. Triumphs will be placed in the hot pits for a "Fanwalk" during lunch on Sunday. I've attached the entry list, plus the current race weekend schedule. On Thursday, cars will run by run group as noted on their registration (vs. a Kastner Cup group). Thanks to Gasket Works LLC, Moss, Good Parts, The Vintage Triumph Register, and the Triumph Wedge Owners Assoc. for providing sponsorships. In-kind sponsors include Huffaker Motorsports, Classic Motor Films, Gasket Innovations, and of course North America Triumphs. We couldn't make this race happen without them! I would also like to thank Kastner Cup Race Committee members Joe Alexander, Mark Alexander, Henry Frye, John Linney, Jeff Eichenfield and Gary Kincel, and our Grand Marshal Hardy Prentice. So, I made something similar with built-in mounting tabs and a coolant catch can to match in aluminum. Although I made something custom, I still thing these commonly found cans would work nicely and it's fairly easy to find a place for them. In the beginning I used two K&N filters, but after a couple weekend of racing they got oil soaked and stopped venting enough, so I removed the filters. Even more reduction with foam ear plugs underneath. The basic red and black 3M muffs are pretty good and available at home improvement store. If in the car, under a helmet, try foam earplugs with wax swimmer?s earplugs on top. There are places that will sell you a mixed set of different foam earplugs so you can figure out which one fits your ear best, and then order them in bulk. The Historic Festival is one of the premier East Coast vintage racing events, and takes place over the Labor Day weekend. Skip Barber asked us "When are you guys going to bring your Kastner Cup to the Historics?", the cards just fell into place. The event is put on by the track, and is co-sanctioned by Vintage Racer Group (VRG) and VSCCA. Track owner Skip Barber calls the shots, and his right-hand man through the whole process is the VRG event chair Paul King. Paul is also a FOT member, those of you from the east should remember his yellow GT6 running events over the past 20 years or so. I have been working closely with Paul on VRG's Driver Development program for several years now, and we realized this aligning of the stars was too perfect to pass up. Paul and I will co-chair the event with Paul managing the track side of the house, and I will manage the FOT side, with help from Curt Johnston and the Alexanders, of course. We hope everyone will mark their calendars now and plan on being with us at Lime Rock Park in 2025! For those of you who have never driven it, Lime Rock is a hoot. It?s short - 1.53 miles - but requires near constant attention. Great altitude changes - the crest of the back hill is good for a little wheelspin, and a wild sideways ride if you are still trying to turn at the crest - and some good turns. It?s not easy to master. There?s always a better lap (at least for me). For those who will say - ?festival event, not a lot of track time? I will say that a 20 minute session is routinely 15 and can be up to 18 laps - a really good time for me is 1:06, though I know Henry and Bob are faster. Track record, I think, is an IMSA GTP car at 43.1 seconds. Anyway, you get lot of laps, usually, so it doesn?t feel short. Lime Rock is full of automotive eye candy, unlike any other east coast event, for sure. I?ve been on track with a Maserati birdcage, raced wheel to wheel/traded places lap after lap with a 260 Cobra, sometimes there?s a preservation class - it?s amazing to see a driver in a prewar car going down the front straight at real speed, with one hand outside the car working the fuel pump. Great place to spectate and lots of beautiful cars to look at that are just on display. Looking forward to it! Even my wife, who generally only comes to one event a year, says she will come for this one. Side note - lodging is limited. Make your lodging plans before you even register to race, if you can. It is a unique experience in so many ways, and it should be a very cool race weekend to run the Kastner Cup. Sure, we have tons of information to get out, but Labor Day 2025 is 17 months out. We are going to get everybody up to speed in due course, here are some highlights. As John Hasty mentioned, the track does not allow race motors to be run on Sundays. So no racing on Sunday, and while I originally thought that was a detriment to having a Kastner Cup, the more I thought about it, the more I realized this is a fantastic opportunity to really get some quality time to spend with our FOT friends. The track holds a huge car show during the day on Sunday, and yes, we are invited to have our race cars towed down to the front straight and have them front and center for the car show festivities. Not required, but some may enjoy that. We are working on our plan for Sunday, stay tuned! Racing resumes on Monday, Labor Day. We have no doubt we will have enough cars to have our own run group, all Triumphs will run together all weekend. Triumphs will be the Featured Race Group, not to be confused with the Featured Marque. More on that later as well. As Scott said, Lime Rock is a pretty unique road racing course. I am borrowing some words from Lime Rock's website about the track: "Connecticut?s Lime Rock Park holds a place in the trinity of legendary road racing circuits in North America. Wisconsin?s Road America ? opened in 1955 ? along with California?s Laguna Seca and Lime Rock, both opened in 1957, are among the oldest continuously operated road racing circuits in the U.S. However, only Lime Rock?s circuit remains exactly the same as when it opened in spring of that year. At once historic and modern without a hint of a grandstand, Lime Rock Park is fan friendly in the extreme. A beautiful park in the truest sense, even those who are not motorsports fans appreciate what Lime Rock Park has to offer. It?s place in motor racing history began with the race which forever changed the face of the sport in America; The 1959 Formula Libre event. The best pros and the best amateurs in the best cars went head-to-head in a three-heat format. Thanks in equal part to its major media coverage and the startling result ? Indy 500 winner Roger Ward won the contest in a midget, besting F1 cars and world championship sports cars ? the Formula Libre weekend knocked down the walls that had separated professional road racing drivers from their amateur brethren. Almost all of the sport?s greats have raced here, from that industry changing Formula Libre race through the SCCA hay days of the 1960s, 70s and 80s in Can-Am, F5000, Trans-Am and Atlantic as well as the Camel GTP and ALMS championships. From the mid-1990s onward, Lime Rock has seen everything from ground-pounding NASCAR stockers and modifieds to the technological tour de force IMSA prototypes. Lime Rock is 1.50 miles of up hill and down dale, a track that looks deceivingly simple, but is immensely challenging to drive quickly. Its setting is a village in Connecticut?s Litchfield County, renowned for its vast historical, cultural and recreational resources. Under Skip Barber?s stewardship, Lime Rock has been serviced by two major, multimillion-dollar renovations. The first was in 2008, when the track surface was repaved in its entirety, and a number of safety elements were brought to the latest standards. Crucially, the project was engineered specifically so as to not change any aspect of its original track design and layout; by Skip?s demand, the same tricky cambers, the same widely variable track widths and the same sinuous radii were precisely preserved. If a driver from 1957 were somehow time-machined into the future and plunked down onto Lime Rock today, they would find no difference in the racing line. The braking, turn-in, apex and track-out points a driver experiences today are the exact same as those Mario Andretti or Dan Gurney and dozens of other legends navigated back in the day. The 2008 project was a remarkable accomplishment and today it makes Lime Rock unique among its North American peers. The second major renovation got underway in late 2014 ? the Road to 60 Project. With this phase, Lime Rock Park now benefits from all-new, fully paved paddocks, gardens, ponds and landscaping, spectator areas, walkways and amenities. In other words, thanks to the 2008 work (for the competitors) and today?s Road to 60 Project (for the fans), Lime Rock is totally the same. And totally different. Welcome to the ?new? old Lime Rock Park." ~~~ If you have never run Lime Rock, and are planning on coming next year to make a strong showing for the Cup, the track does offer a test day on Tuesday before the Festival. Or, better yet, run this year's Festival as practice. Or, the Empire Cup in early June. My experience has shown me a fast lap at Lime Rock does not come quickly or easily! My last tidbit for the day, here is a good track talk... https://limerock.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/LapofLRP_TurnByTurn.pdf Cheers Henry Frye 2025 Kastner Cup Co-Chair On 2024-04-21 12:58, Scott Janzen via Fot wrote: > Wow, that?s exciting news! Even though I aged out for racing I may trailer my TR 3A there to watch the racing and place it in the Sunday show. Some of you know I owned Don Bricks TR 4 a short while, last racing it at the 2017 Kastner Cut at Blackhawk. Also some of you know I raced my 1961 Mini for 25 years. My two most fun tracks to race Tweety Bird across the US and once at Mosport are Grattan and Lime Rock Park. Lime Rock being the last two years I raced and what a hoot in a small car. Yes you do get wheel spin cresting the big hill then stay on it and see how much nerve you have for the down hill curve to the Sam Posey Straight. I fully expect a rather large showing of Triumph street cars and Triumph people, the fact that one of my other gigs at the moment is heading up New England Triumphs does give us decent access to a rather large group of enthusiasts. ;-) We are working on getting Triumph street car parking close to the B Paddock where Triumph Central will be set up. Thanks to everyone for all the encouraging words I have been getting. Turns out Lime Rock is a bucket list track for a lot of FOT and the excitement is building! Henry Frye President ? I have them out to Lime Rock every June for some paced laps during the HRG/Empire Club/VSCCA event. I'm sure we'll be working something out with them for the Cup weekend. FYI Henry, your Triumphs are invited to come to Lime Rock this year, Saturday June 1st at noon, to join us for some free lunch laps with the Brits club. Proud of you bringing that big cup home to New Mexico. One more bit of trivia that relates to Hardy (Mr. E-type tow car) presenting the cup to Walt is that for a few years Walt faithfully drove his TR6 racer to the track (and around town) - and if I?m not mistaken - sometimes towing a little trailer with his race supplies. This is EXTREMELY RARE!! Especially to be complete with chassis. These were made as a ?side gig? by Devin sports cars in the 1950s to encourage interest in their sports car bodies. It was gifted to the original Calgary owner (a late family friend) at the age of 7 in 1959 (seen in the black and white photo) by his uncle who worked for Bill Devin, building sports car bodies in the late 50s and early 60s. It is in unrestored and untouched condition awaiting restoration, or to be left as-is to preserve its history. A restored Devin jr. Deluxe sold at Bonhams auctions for just shy of $15,000usd and I am unaware of any other example that have gone to auction or been sold with a full chassis since. Included is the complete body and chassis as pictured, an original set of loose tires, recreation acrylic wind screen, original 1950s Devin sales flyers and advertisements, the original black and white 1959 photograph, as well as a short written history of the original owner. -This is best suited to a collector or restorer. Given its rarity and history, it?s not really a kids toy Asking $4600 -Located in Airdrie Alberta -403*464*1 five five five Not interested in trades. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Roll cage - I agree with all of you about the roll cage ? looks funky and would require replacement regardless Fire system ? yes, Firecharger AFFF out dated and no longer acceptable at a lot of tracks, and would require replacement, recert at a minimum I have sent a list of inquiries about tires, and expiration of the rest of the safety equipment (harnesses, fuel cell, seat etc). Half shafts/hubs ? same have inquired about the entire suspension and requested pictures Sam Halkias motor is a definite plus ? agree, but am checking to see when it was built and last refresh. Do not want to run into the same problems with my current project. To answer an unanswered question, yes I recently purchased a race TR6. Without getting into details, it has turned into a complete rebuild ? engine, cooling system, rear subframe and suspension, roll cage etc. So, I needed a ride while I rebuild the current TR6. Thanks again for all the feedback on this car and will keep you posted! Too bad the trip to the Kastner Cup and back used up all my AAA service calls, and I spent well over 2 grand on it, but I happy to be home. And only 4,827 new emails to deal wih at some later time. I have some super GoPro footage of the Sunday race between Curt Johnston and myself which I have composed on RaceRender but for some reason my YouTube account doesn't like the format. I'll reach out to a nerd friend of mine tomorrow for help. I'll post it as soon as possible. Thanks Again to all my FOT buddies. The first portion of the video is from my helmet mounted camera during the Cup Race on Saturday showing how "gentle" it really is and nowhere near as dramatic as some photos and video taken by others would lead you to believe. Another portion of the video we had mounted a camera to the external side rail of the roll structure, during a Practice session, looking back at the wheel to watch it lift and land. https://youtu.be/AiYYzS9oGYs -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
