JoeB On Thursday, September 21, 2023 at 08:15:34 AM EDT, yellow04 via Fot wrote: Joe, If your gearbox has slowly started leaking around the adapter plate, in all likelihood the issue is the six bolts that hold the plate to the back of the gearbox have loosened up. If nobody safety wired them or didn't use any kind of threadlocker on them, this is typically the problem when leaks slowly start in this area. The likelihood of needing to replace the adapter plate is not all that high, assuming the leak is not huge and you have not been driving the car with copious amounts of oil leaking about. The adapter plate is not part of the overdrive unit, so replacing only the adapter plate is not too difficult. Six nuts hold the OD unit to the adapter plate, remove the nuts from the 4 short studs first, then start working the nuts on the two long studs evenly, and spring pressure should separate the OD unit from the adapter plate. Pay attention to the 8 springs as you slide the OD unit off the mainshaft, when they fall out they like to roll under things. Place the OD unit aside, other that cleaning the gasket surface you will not be messing with that. I use the little bottle of Permatex Aviation gasket sealer for gearboxs, seems to work well for me. The six bolts that attach the adapter plate to the back of the gearbox case are now visible, if these bolts are not properly torqued you just found the source of your leak. Remove them, clean up your gasket surfaces and reseal. The same gasket is used here as the non-overdrive gearbox.? Rimmers sells bolts specifically for this application, they have threadlocker that is safe for the aluminum case on the threads. They have been working for me.?These 6 bolts may be safety wired, always a good idea if you don't buy a set of new bolts from Rimmers. If you go the safety wire route, pay attention to the parts as it is easy to run the wire in such a way that it fouls when the OD unit is installed. The last adapter plate I bought from Rimmers was embossed with "ORS", I believe it was made by Overdrive Repair Services, the business started by Laycock employees after Laycock closed their doors. I didn't really compare it to a Triumph adapter plate, but I can see how John Esposito might call it an upgraded adapter plate. If you need one, I'd just order it from Rimmers along with those 6 bolts.? Assembling the OD unit back onto the gearbox is where the real fun is, you need to line up two sets of splines in the OD unit, compress the 8 springs and make sure you don't foul the oil pump plunger on the cam. Many ways to accomplish this, some are tedious, frustrating, and can completely drive you crazy. The easiest way I have found is to safety wire the pump plunger, install the pump drive cam and make sure it is pointing away from the pump, apply the sealant to the gasket and place in on the OD unit, align the splines in the OD unit, (a spare OD mainshaft is really helpful with this) and offer up the OD unit to the box. Slowly slide the unit on assuring everything is lined up until the gasket is almost touching the adapter plate. Then, install the nuts and washers on the long studs only a couple of turns. Then you slide the OD unit backwards WITHOUT TURNING the rear flange until it hits the nuts. Then you install the 8 springs in their correct position, (shorts go inboard, longs go outboard) by stuffing them onto their posts on the sliding member then levering the other end onto the nubs on the adapter plate. Take a really good look to make sure you have all 8 springs correctly installed, then tighten the nuts equally to draw the OD unit home. Then install the 4 nuts and washers on the short studs, remove the safety wire on the oil pump plunger, refill with oil and you are good to go. If you run into problems or need to borrow a spare OD mainshaft to line up the splines in the OD unit, feel free to reach out! I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure that the TR6 stud knurl is the same or "close enough" to the Spitfire because one of the locals used to take my TR6 cast-off studs for his Spitfire. But if you need to play with whee spacers, look at the offerings from ARP. Totally worth the money. Get the bullet-nose style - they really help to avoid cross threading when you're thrashing to get the wheels on before a session. Not that THAT ever happens. When I was investigating this swap years ago, I seem to remember one hurtle was a miss match between the pilot diameter on the main shaft and the bore in the input shaft. Several different caged needle bearing options as well. Can't remember if I found a combination. Other things took over. Begs the question, were there ever two transmissions made with the same parts? ? As I understand it, the input gear drives the layshaft. Lock the input to the output and you have 1:1 4th gear. To make a close ratio box, they could have changed the input-layshaft ratio, in which case the input shafts would not be interchangeable between the spit and GT6, but the 1-3 gear sets could be. Alternately they could also use the same input-layshaft gearset and then change the three lower ratio gearsets. In the latter case the input shafts could indeed be interchangeable... If you look at the 1-3 ratios in Joe's link, the Spit and GT6 ratios do not scale by a fixed factor - indicating it is not simply a change of input-layshaft ratio. This means that the 1-3 gearsets are different, and the input-layshaft could be common. Of course it's also possible they changed both the layshaft and the 1-3 ratios.. Pulling tappets just to put an eyeball on them between times when the head needs to come off seems like a valuable thing to have, but I am don't think it is worth the effort to modify the head. As Jason states, there is always a chance of not enough material where it needs to be. I like to run the engine with the valve cover off for a few seconds every few events to verify the push rods are spinning, if all are spinning that indicates to me the cam/tappet interface should be doing what it is supposed to. Yes, oil splashing about is an issue doing this, don't rev the motor! If you are truly intent on seeing the tappet face and the cam lobe, I see no reason you couldn't use a borescope. You would need to pull the tappet out of its bore, lay it on its side on the shelf above the tappet bores, and fish the borescope down there for a quick view, then reinstall the tappet. If I had reason to suspect one bad lifter, I might try this, but to do all 12, I don't think so. On a related note, I know getting lifters lined up in their galleries with the head installed on the wet liner TR engines is a real treat. The good news is if you turn the engine upside down on the engine stand without the rocker shaft and push rods in place, after you suffer through the agony of fishing all the tappets back into the bores with your only access through the push rod tubes, you will have learned a valuable lesson and never pull off that rookie error again! Don't ask how I know this... Message-ID: <348881217.79721.1698008215653@connect.xfinity.com> Hello FOT, Below is a report and critical update on the 2024 Kastner Cup at Sonoma Raceway. The updated Kastner Cup poster is attached. Revised Race Date (Now April 18-21). SVRA had a signed contract with Sonoma Raceway for the last weekend in April which, is why we announced the 2024 date at Road America. Unfortunately, Sonoma Raceway forced SVRA to move the SpeedTour event up a week to April 18-21 (Thursday-Sunday). This threw a wrench in SVRA plans for back-to-back race weekends at Sonoma and Laguna Seca, but if you?re able to make both races it will be worth the effort. SVRA is offering us a Kastner Cup/Triumph Feature Race on Sunday at Laguna Seca if we have enough cars registered. Triumph to be Featured Marque Triumphs will be the featured marque at the Sonoma SpeedTour. There will not be a National Trans Am race, so we will have the top billing. SVRA has asked for our suggestions for a Grand Marshall of the entire race weekend. As the featured marque, we will also have coverage in the SpeedTour Magazine which now has a distribution of 30,000 copies. Also, SVRA is looking into the cost of preparing ?Hero Cards? for all Triumph racers (a business card with an image of your car). SVRA did this in the past, but they want to bring it back on a limited basis with ?Collectors Series? for cars in the featured marques. Car Preparation Rules SVRA will allow us to determine race group rules. There only concern is safety, so cars will be teched on that basis. However, SVRA reserves the right to place cars in an appropriate run group (other than for Kastner Cup) based on modifications and equipment (e.g.; slick tires usually means placing a car in a faster group). Cars running out of class will not be eligible for a podium position in that class (again, this does not apply to the Kastner Cup). Registration Discounts ? Free Test Days! * SVRA will offer a free Thursday Test Day (over $300 value) for all Kastner Cup/Triumph registrants at both Sonoma and Laguna Seca. * On Black Friday/Cyber Monday, the regular registration amounts will be discounted. So please register that weekend if possible. Early registration benefits drivers with reduced costs and the Kastner Cup as it allows SVRA to lock in our practice/race group schedule early. Race Weekend Schedule * Triumphs will run in their respective Run Groups for practice, unless we have a large group of 35 or more cars that would justify our own group. * SVRA will provide one or two Feature Races on Saturday/Sunday depending on the number of cars registered. Again, a large group will allow us to run two exclusive Kastner Cup races (KCup and Reunion). If we have a small group, the Kastner Cup race would be on Sunday. * Assuming we have enough cars for two featured races, the Kastner Cup will be awarded after the Saturday race as is the tradition. Other Activities * Huffaker Motorsports agreed to host a social event for us on Friday. Their shop is located at the track up the hill from the paddock. * The British Sportscar Hall Of Fame may have a presence on Friday, but it is undetermined now. * SVRA will reserve a garage for the Kastner Cup so we can host social events and present the Kastner Cup Awards. * The Kastner Cup group will be assigned paddock space together, but we need to coordinate the space required by getting trailer length information from each driver. This will significantly lower our stress finding good space in the paddock. Please pass on to me the length of your trailer so we can plan space for everyone. Trailer Storage for Layovers to Laguna * SVRA is attempting to negotiate trailer storage between races with the tracks. It is available, but they are trying to lower the cost. Laguna Seca Race Weekend (two weekends later) * If you sign up for the Laguna Seca race, SVRA will provide a free Thursday Practice Day ($350+ value). * If there is enough Triumphs registered, we will get a Triumph/Kastner Cup Feature Race on Sunday at Laguna Seca! Social Activities Between Races For those that stay in California between races, the Committee will organize some group activities. This would likely include wine tasting, dinners, and a bit of sailing (Kastner Cup Sailing Club). Hotels We are researching hotels and will report back soon. Feel free to pass on your suggestions to me. Thanks! Used w-58s are getting hard to find and some repair parts such as main shafts are said to be not available. I would suggest you look into the Miata 5-speed conversion instead. If I see something, it may be too late, or it may help avoid messing up something that I don't want to replace. Need to be able to differentiate what you find in the filter. Oil analysis is fine, but you need to establish a trend for the specific engine and then understand what the changing analysis is pointing to. You have all winter (unless you're going to Florida for winter racing). Take the cam and tappets out to inspect contact faces. (Keep track of the location and orientation of all parts.) Take the oil pan off and at least look at a couple of main bearings and rod bearings. This can be done with the crank, pistons, and rods still in the engine. Looking for leaks at the valve seats, inspecting rocker clearance, touching up or lapping the valves, and doing a rough check on guide wear is the easy part. If you've been doing this once or twice a year for a few years and nothing ever changes, then you're in heaven. ________________________________ From: Fot on behalf of James Trudeau via Fot Sent: Sunday, October 29, 2023 9:45 AM To: Ken Knight Cc: fot at autox.team.net Subject: Re: [Fot] Race Engine Refreshing Frequency - compression results Thanks Ken and Tony, Glad to hear the bottom end has more life.
