Disclaimer, I volunteered to help with the VRG drivers school, and was
asked to get the word out there about the two programs the school
offers. Both programs run at Summit Point Motorsports Park in West
Viginia.
The licensing school runs just prior to the Jefferson 500, and could be
best bang for your buck these days to get a racing credential from a VMC
accredited sanctioning body. Graduates of the school have always given
the program great reviews, you do the on-track exercises in your own
race car plus get a lot of skid pad time in an ex-police Crown Vic.
The Advanced/Refresher Clinic is a one day program designed for current
drivers to up thier game, or to get licensed drivers who may have been
off track for some time back up to speed, so to speak.
The email blast I copied below has more details.
Typically, by this time of the year both programs are oversubscribed,
but we still have slots available for both programs. If you know anybody
thinking of jumping into the sport, or think your skills could benefit
from a refresher, 2023 would be a great year to do it!
Cheers

> If you or someone you know has been thinking about joining in the fun of vintage racing, they couldn't find a better way to begin their journey than with the highly regarded VRG Licensing School [2], which will start May 16th and end May18th, just before the annual Jefferson 500 vintage racing festival at West Virginia's Summit Point Raceway (May 18-21). The licensing school has been designed for students with little or no racing experience.
>
> The school is staffed to almost a 1 to 1 student/instructor ratio. There's a lot to learn in a relatively short amount of time and that personal contact is important to making sure each student gets comfortable with driving their vintage race cars on the track while making sure they do so safely in the presence of other, faster cars/drivers. Throughout the school, emphasis is placed on understanding and adhering to safety rules and situational awareness, understanding what is going on all around in order to make good, safe decisions. Successful licensing school graduates are awarded a VRG provisional competition license and can use their new license to race in the Jefferson 500 that weekend.
>
> The VRG Licensing School [2] combines on-line pre-work, classroom lecture, on-track exercises and individual coaching to fully prepare students at all levels for safe and fun wheel to wheel vintage racing. As a member of the Vintage Motorsports Council, VRG competition licenses are widely accepted by other clubs.
>
> Those on-track exercises are everybody's favorite!
>
> A series of braking/handling exercises allows students to safely build experience with threshold braking, heel-toe downshifting and how to balance brakes, throttle and steering to optimize speed through corners. Students will learn the subtleties of oversteer/understeer balance at the limits of adhesion in a series of skid pad exercises led by our SPTF (Summit Point Training Facility) partners using the SPTF training vehicles.
>
> On the main track, students move from simple exercises designed to teach them their way around the track, including locating flag stations and the basic racing line before learning safe high-speed wheel-to-wheel driving, passing and racing starts.
>
> Our expectation throughout the exercises is for students to demonstrate safe, predictable behavior and to become comfortable with high speed, wheel-to-wheel vintage racing.
>
> Things kick off with Tuesday night's classroom sessions focusing on situational awareness and how drivers need to respond. Instructors use a variety of techniques including videos of actual on-track situations to facilitate discussions about what is happening in those clips and what the appropriate driver responses should be.
>
> Wednesday is almost entirely dedicated to on track work with a few shorter classroom sessions.
>
> On Thursday it all comes together as we will be focusing on race starts and again using video clips and discussions to teach the students how to grid, drive pace laps and how to handle the starts themselves. We all know race starts can be one of the most exciting and challenging parts of any race, particularly for newcomers! Our objective is to prepare the students to safely and successfully participate in race starts at the Jefferson 500 and in the future.
>
> Registration for the VRG Licensing School [2] is open now. There are only a limited number of slots available and they are filling up fast so if you know someone who is interested, they should register as soon as possible!
>
> The VRG Advanced & Refresher Clinic [3] is a one day, very intensive program for experienced racers and for former racers who have been away from racing for an extended period. The Clinic not only reinforces all the technical and safety practices taught in the licensing school, but is also designed to give participants an opportunity to learn more advanced vintage racing skills in SPTF cars (the legendary Crown Vics) and then practice those skills in their own cars.
>
> The increased car control and confidence generated allows Clinic attendees to drive with more skill and can move them further forward in any race field. As mentioned, this Clinic is also a great way for experienced racers who have been away from the sport for some time or who's original licenses have expired to knock a lot of rust off while paving the way for them to get a VRG Competition license.
>
> Because of the intense advanced level of instruction there is again a close student to instructor ratio and the number of participants is very limited. If you have interest in attending this years Clinic, you'll need to register right away to be able to reserve a spot.
