[Fot] Diaphram Pressure Plate

Jack shares some important info to be aware of.
If you are in there this far and would like to upgrade the pressure plate to a diaphragm style, go all the way and include the flywheel as part of the upgrade. Get a light flywheel that will be ready to accept the pressure plate. A TR4A-TR6 pressure plate should match the new light flywheel. If you have a (4) full syncro gear box already, the factory starter should work fine. But, you might also consider upgrading the starter to a more compact, modern hi-torque unit. I have enjoyed these improvements on my TR3. I have a close gear set that uses the finer (21?) spline input shaft, so my clutch disc is a TR7 or MGB unit, but the pressure plate is TR4A-TR6. The throw-out bearing with also have to match the pressure plate. So change the bearing to match the pressure plate as well.
The early TR2-3 gearbox had a short nose starter and the bell housing casting was also short or shallow to go with this starter. On the later style, the bell housing accommodated the long nose starter with a deeper casting. Also, the early trans cover will NOT fit over the later, deeper bell housing design. The cover would need to be modified to fit the later gear box housing...or, be replaced by a later TR3 trans cover. If you happen to need the later cover, I happen to have a few in my TR stash. I learned this the hard way...after beautifully refinishing my cover, I had to hammer it out to make it fit over the deeper bell housing casting.

If you have the early TR-3 (I think up to VIN 50,000) it used a different style starter motor. The early cars had a long starter which engages the flywheel from the front. After 50,000 they switched to a shorter started which engages from the rear of the flywheel. All later TR-3's, TR-4's and TR-4A's used this same starter. So, if you switch flywheels, make sure you have the right starter. The bell housing also changed at TR-3 50,000 to accommodate the later starter.
