[Fot] Snap Rings in Pistons

Jack:  This is the kind of snap ring that Honda used in the two strokes I worked on and I took a small blade screwdriver (about 5mm) and ground `1/2 of the blade to a depth of about the same size which made a hook or sorts. Used it to put them in, like Tony said using hand first, then using the longer  blade to push in place. Taking then out using the longer part of the blade on the ring and the larger part as leverage on the piston.  It didn’t scar the piston if you were patient, but they were not coated.  Like Steve said not the best engineered thing I’ve seen, probably a cost cutting thing from the bean counters.  Yamaha had much better rings, one end of the ring was bent vertical so you could use an ordinary pair of needle nose plyers to get them in and out.

I've been able to use a small thin screwdriver to work them in.  Put the end in the wrist pin hole and angle the blade to compress the ring.  Hard to describe.  I go as far as I can by hand and then use the screwdriver to get more leverage.  There's got to be a special purpose tool too.

I am assembling a Ford 1600 CC engine for my Morgan and have bought new pistons.  The snap rings that came with these pistons do not have the holes in the ends.  See attached picture.

These snap rings are very stiff and I can't squeeze them in by hand.  I also can't figure out a way to grip them with the snap ring pliers I have.  Does anyone know if there is a special tool I need to use to install these?  Or any suggestions about how I should go about installing them?  Thanks.
