And, once again, I am reminded of how fortunate I was to have Jerry Barr as my dad.

Subject: Re: [Fot] Close ratio gears
When I was 16, I was backing my TR4A into a parking space at my high school and I was jolted to a stop. I was quite confused as I was surely still a few feet away from the car parked behind me! I got out to look. “Nope, nothing there!”
So I pulled forward a little and tried again. Bang! I was brought to a stop again!
I was 16 and knew nothing about broken gears locking up in a differential, but I instinctively put it together in my mind and knew that was the only possibility!
I limped it home very slowly without incident. I found a used IRS differential and switch them out. Then I opened up the old one and there it was, a big broken tooth rolling around the bottom and scars on the case where it had wedged.
Your images remind me how lucky I was that it didn’t happen at speed. And so glad that my dad was never aware of the whole affair and what could have happened, as he was already very uncomfortable with me driving a car “That should only be used in parades.” (They were like Model A’s to him, even though the car was only 11 years old in 1978!)
Thanks for sharing.

I have a close ratio set from a TR7 in a Spitfire 3 rail box. John at Quantium makes them up. He has the input shaft cut down and hardened to match whatever Triumph they're attached to. I'm using a 10 spline version to fit a 1296 SJ engine but he makes them for GT6 and 1500's as well. Full syncro, the only downside is, while close ratio rearing, 3rd gear isn't the optimum range for the torque curve of my engine.
Rock solid, the only problem I had was when the diff chipped a tooth. It locked up at speed and among other fun stuff twisted the driveshaft, broke the tailpiece and bent the output shaft. The same gears are still in it, 15 years later.

Wouldn't mind having another one. Should have bought one when they were available at $600 or what ever it was.
It's difficult to understand the reasoning behind not letting a more modern and available option to be used. Toyota, Miata, T5 or what ever. Had I known that to date, absolutely no tech inspector would ever even look at or question my gear box or if I was using rack and pinion steering, I may have gone that route in the first place. I don't think these items make the car or driver go much faster and spoil the competition. Some are using these already anyhow. I've heard the argument many times, that basically the original option with over-drive had 7 gears. Why wouldn't any 5-speed be allowed.
