[Fot] Pistons

All the race pistons are FORGED, they are super tough. Cast pistons don't have anywhere near the same strength.
While everyone is listing success with vendors, I will admit that my JE pistons didn't break when I chucked a rod, I can report that Diamond also makes a fine product. I cannot speak to lead times, the last set I bought was about 5 years ago, but they were super fast delivery at that time. Regarding JE, I thought their customer service was terrible when I tried to clear up a problem that they created by shipping a set with the wrong wrist pin retainers... but that was around 20 years ago. I'm sure thing have improved since then. For some reason I hear sarcastic laughter in the distance... oh well.

HI TED!

On the other hand, I was very impressed with how TOUGH the JE pistons were.  I had one chew up and spit out a valve head that broke off.  A little damage to the cylinder wall, a little damage to the head (which uncle jack repaired for me), and the top of the piston looked like the surface of the moon.  Repaired head and cylinder wall, installed a new piston, back in business.  I dropped a valve on a stock style piston and it was game over for the whole lower end – shattered piston, broken rod, big hole in the block.

Are ALL the pistons from the aftermarket (JE, Wiseco, etc.) that tough?  This isn’t an ad for JE – I’m legitimately interested in the experience of others here.

Dave,

I have a long and unpleasant tale about J&E I attempted to order for my Sprite race engine. After many months they crapped out and I went to Wiseco. The originally said 12 weeks for custom made, coated flat-tops. They then updated it to 6 weeks, and finally delivered the pistons in just 3 weeks! They were also very easy to deal with regarding the specifics of the engine. I have since ordered forged 89mm coated set for my TR3 race car (through BFE), and again they were way faster than they originally claimed. Good looking parts and very good to deal with. As an interesting aside, they seem to have purchased J&E, so maybe they will get better?

Cheers,

Jake

Well the Machine shop that can work on my TR3 engine said they are 4 months out so that certainly gives me time to order Pistons.  For Street use and only the occasional Track day I have time to see about ordering from JE or Wisco rather than the flat top pistons from Moss that are manufactured in India (even if they are sent to the UK where they are machined).  Does anyone have specs for a piston I could see about getting made or can recommend a set?  My Engine does have an Isky Cam (not sure which one based on the Cam Chart that went around the other week).

Currently the car does have flat top pistons in 87mm.  Any real concerns moving up to an 89m?  I have heard cooling can be an issue and the car does have a Wizard Radiator and an Oil Cooler
