Does anyone know where this Spitfire is, now? Photo of the car attached.

OK, here's a car search for ya'll based in the US. I'm searching for a
Triumph Spitfire that ran SCCA G/Production. It was raced by Bert Brown
from approx 1973 - 1988, before being sold to Bill Williams, as pictured.
It contested the SCCA Runoffs several times with Bert. The SCCA log book
number was 19775. Bert raced it out of CA. Bill fitted the unique dashboard
when he purchased the car, as per the photo. Any help in tracking down this
car would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Hi folks. A friend who races an MG, just asked me what I know about the
Garmin Catalyst track recorder. I use a cell phone app (Track Addict) to
collect data and find it helpful but have no real world experience with
anything else.

The Garmin seems expensive, more like something you'd find in a dentist's
track day Porsche but his wife wants to know if he'd like it for his
birthday.

Anyone use this or a similar all-in-one device that I could recommend to
him ?

I borrowed one for a test and tune a while back.  While it does all the
expected data collection, the really interesting function is the AI-based
driver coaching that kicks in after 2-3 laps.  It seemed to work as my
sector times improved.  Is it worth $799?...well here is what Sam Smith has

Mike,
       My dad and I own a AIM Solo 2 GPS data logger (the basic Solo 2, not
the one with modern ECU inputs).  We have a steering wheel mounting bracket
on each car, and have used it for some basic comparisons on my laptop after
sessions.  We have yet to fully take advantage of everything it can do, but
it's a cool gadget.  It also functions as a  lap timer/speedometer display
in use.  A quick glance down after passing start/finish shows lap times.

Last year at the Jefferson 500 I had three great sessions with a guy
running a Porch 914 who had one of these. We had a fun debrief after
each session, and after the feature race he pulls his Garmin Catalyst
out of his car and showed me what it captured (other than lots of video
of my bootlid!) and a lot of the things they covered in the Hagerty
article. It looked extremely helpful, but the one thing I don't remember
him mentioning was the live coaching feature. I can only wonder why...  

I really liked what I saw, but the research revealed two showstoppers,
the unit can not get wet and the camera has a very specific spot it
needs to be mounted. Naturally, that spot is where the rear view mirror
on the windscreen goes, so strike two. In my case, game over.  

So my data acquisition program remains a knock-off Go-Pro camera that I
neglect to turn on at least half the time!

For a poor man?s data acquisition system, we are using the Track Addict app, available with any smartphone. ?I have mine rigged up on a Kindle tablet of all things, and am using a 10hz external GPS receiver. ?(Phones usually have 1 hz which works, but not ideal.). ?I find this gives great information for short money, and the bonus is that if you have a chance to glance down, it gives you split times and green/red if you are faster or slower that split. ?Not to worry; I am not reading ?The Last Open Road? down the straights; although might give me something to do at RA. ?
?Comparing data afterwards helps us greatly. ?(I have my Kindle mounted in the Speedometer position). ? You can also set the app to turn on/off your GoPro, and it will sync up data to the video if you later combine with Race Render on a PC/Mac.
Fast forward to stuff from the autocross world, there is an app called Solostorm which downloads video and overlays the data gathered real time, comparing drivers on the spot, between runs even. ? Awesome. ?They just released a track version; check out Petral Data systems. ?Haven?t tried the track version yet, but after years of not spending the money on the software, I?m now kicking myself for not getting it sooner, with its instant feedback. ?TrackAddict can do almost the same, but requires more fiddling?. And can compare afterwards to see what was happening when, g force, top speeds, segment times, braking points and strengths, etc. ?
It was super interesting to see the data comparison between the #80 and 114 TR4?s with the same driver; one had an 11 mph advantage at exit of the last turn at Thompson, but gave up in gearing later on, and also in speed around the hairpin. ?(Quaife vs welded diff). ?Super interesting!
Having the split times displayed real time with TrackAddict?helped me at the Glen realize I could hold turn 1 in 4th gear, and only lose a tenth or two; also helped not having a shift later; top speed was the same into the bus stop and at the top of the esses. ?? ?I was likely overslowing?downshifting to third, but since I couldn?t shift, ?I found out how to carry speed to hold 4th?. LOL. ? (Was the nascar configuration). ?I used to shun data, as ?too much info? but now I see the wisdom, and it helped me real time with the proper tools.

If you can swing it, the AiM MXL Strada combined with a SmartyCam is a pretty hot setup.  Spendy, for sure.  But I can just pull the SD card from the camera after a session and pop it in my laptop and watch HD video with data overlay.  No muss, no fuss.

For a poor man?s data acquisition system, we are using the Track Addict app, available with any smartphone.  I have mine rigged up on a Kindle tablet of all things, and am using a 10hz external GPS receiver.  (Phones usually have 1 hz which works, but not ideal.).  I find this gives great information for short money, and the bonus is that if you have a chance to glance down, it gives you split times and green/red if you are faster or slower that split.  Not to worry; I am not reading ?The Last Open Road? down the straights; although might give me something to do at RA.

 Comparing data afterwards helps us greatly.  (I have my Kindle mounted in the Speedometer position).   You can also set the app to turn on/off your GoPro, and it will sync up data to the video if you later combine with Race Render on a PC/Mac.

Fast forward to stuff from the autocross world, there is an app called Solostorm which downloads video and overlays the data gathered real time, comparing drivers on the spot, between runs even.   Awesome.  They just released a track version; check out Petral Data systems.  Haven?t tried the track version yet, but after years of not spending the money on the software, I?m now kicking myself for not getting it sooner, with its instant feedback.  TrackAddict can do almost the same, but requires more fiddling?. And can compare afterwards to see what was happening when, g force, top speeds, segment times, braking points and strengths, etc.

It was super interesting to see the data comparison between the #80 and 114 TR4?s with the same driver; one had an 11 mph advantage at exit of the last turn at Thompson, but gave up in gearing later on, and also in speed around the hairpin.  (Quaife vs welded diff).  Super interesting!

Having the split times displayed real time with TrackAddict helped me at the Glen realize I could hold turn 1 in 4th gear, and only lose a tenth or two; also helped not having a shift later; top speed was the same into the bus stop and at the top of the esses.     I was likely overslowing downshifting to third, but since I couldn?t shift,  I found out how to carry speed to hold 4th?. LOL.   (Was the nascar configuration).  I used to shun data, as ?too much info? but now I see the wisdom, and it helped me real time with the proper tools.

You can also check flight costs to the following airports.  I suspect Milwaukee will offer the best price, however all of these airports are about the same drive time, although Madison is a bit longer.

Hi Russ,
         I'm assuming this is for the TR4-TR6  type gearbox?  The set I
ordered in 2021 for my personal gearbox took over 9 months to be shipped,
then multiple other sets ordered in 2022 for customer gearboxes ended up
being canceled after many months on order.  I was able to determine that
the manufacturer of these gear sets will not be making any more.  Must not
have been worth it for such a small volume.


**WARNING, this now becomes a commercial message...**

I've been working with a gear manufacturer on an alternative option.  Not a
direct copy, some details are being improved:
  *2nd/3rd/4th close ratio's for racing
  *1st gear ratio is "stock" to get moving with less stress on your clutch,
and easier to drive at paddock speeds.
  *  A "racing" gear design - they will be noisy.

The first set has been produced and is on its way to me.  I hope to put
them through their paces over the coming months before moving forward with
having further sets produced.
Best case scenario if everything works out, is to have them available later
this year, but it's way too early to put a date on it.

Final price TBD, but they will be more expensive than the previous close
ratio sets.  Much less expensive than a dog box conversion.

For planning purposes, I have started a list of those who are interested,
please email me directly.

A early Jag XKE has a beautiful brass knob under the plastic coating that originally showed the shift pattern. Weighs about 7lbs but sure is pretty. 
Start of the Kas Cup race at Watkins Glen 2008(?). Got a good second gear run up to the green flag. Picked up a few spots. Hit third and that nice brass knob broke right off, landed in my side of the tunnel, and I spent half the race trying to keep it from going under the pedals. Finding a  rolling ball while wearing a harness isn?t easy, but by about lap 5 I had tossed it into the passenger footwell. Still have it as a memento but have never used it since - just been using a big nut with a wrap of duct tape ever since - safety you know?
I?ve heard of the Balsa wood knobs from the Porsche 917 being a weight savings but since you?ve got to buy a 917 to get a real one, I?m not sure the benefit. And probably not ?vintage legal? for a TR anyway - but ask Henry M.

Mark J. Bradakis has had a lifelong interest in British cars. After he 
bought his first Triumph, a GT6+, he got involved pretty heavily into 
the marque.? He was involved in the early days of The British Motor Club 
of Utah, putting out their monthly newsletter. He got involved in the 
Utah region of the SCCA, also editing their newsletter and serving a 
term as road race director.? An active autocrosser, he was instrumental 
in the Vintage Triumph Register?s Autocross Advisory Board, laying down 
the first real set of rules for the? national convention?s autocross 
event.? Mark ran Intermountain Vintage Racing for a few years, trying to 
bring road racing back into Utah.

But Mark?s real claim to fame is Team Net.? In the 1980s there was 
USENET, which consisted of many different discussion groups covering a 
wide range of topics.? Not all of them were about computers.? There was 
a rec.autos subset of groups.? Sprung from the USENET groups was a 
British cars email list, run by Dale Cook.? It was taken over by Jim 
Muller, who handed the reins to Mark in the late 1980s. In April of 1991 
autox.team.net hit the airwaves.? It started as two lists, autox and 
british-cars.? At the time it was the only game in town, becoming quite 
a success. Eventually it grew to over 70 different lists and sublists, 
as of this writing there are about 30 left.? As the internet grew, so 
did competition from many other specialty web sites, forums and such.

But thousands of stalwart supporters of Team.Net remain, and Mark 
continues to keep the spirit alive, and the bits flowing freely.

By your coy reply, I have to assume you ARE running one of those cheater Balsa shift knobs! Even if covered (hidden?) by the finest hand stitched Connolly leather, it?s still not ?period correct? now is it?

So, I?m putting together my car with a fresh engine.  With a new engine, I almost always spend a few hours on a local chassis dyno - seat the rings, set the timing, check performance, play with carb jets, etc.  Way better than showing up at an event with adjustments not made or an engine that blows up on the first run.

Anyway, I have a new quartermaster 7-1/4? clutch assembly and flywheel that I would like to put in. However, I have to slip the clutch a lot to get the chassis dyno spooled up, and if I do 5-10 pulls, that?s a lot of clutch slipping.  Am I going to toast the new little guy?

The alternative, which is of course not very attractive, is to put the full size flywheel/clutch assembly in, do the dyno runs, then pull everything out and swap it. Basically an engine/trans pull, as swapping a flywheel with the engine still in the car and the transmission out just sounds painful.

Thoughts?

What I?ve done with Formula Vees is to literally ?kick-start? the dyno drum - Get two big guy on both sides of the car to get the drum rolling with foot power. Just a few MPH helps a lot. If need be to get it moving, you can also use the starter motor in first gear (ignition off) for the first couple revolutions (it?s really not as hard on the starter as it sounds), put the clutch in, and let your ?mules? kick the best they can. 
Sounds hokey but if it works for a 50hp Vee it should help your clutch too.

I bought mine from revington from England. My car is the example they use on their website. Great in my tr4. Svra requires it. Great safety improvement?

The Good Parts TR 6 dual cylinder system works great and can be adapted to a TR4 with little trouble. Perhaps will work on a 3 as well.  Worth exploring. Will need a Tar6 pedal assembly. If that can go into a 3, you should be all set!

If you can weld, copying the Devi from design is pretty easy. The issue for a TR3 is the width you have available in the existing box that cuts into the firewall. I had to put the cylinders closer together to make sure they all fit into that existing space. It involves filing off some meat from the cylinder mounting flanges to get the center to center a little closer. Has worked well for me for the past 14 years. If I were starting over, I might just cut some additional material out of the firewall and rebuild that box so that I could use a more standard bore spacing.

Hi Todd,
I designed and built the brake master setup in my TR3.  The box closely mimics the factory unit and just fits in the firewall box.
I had to shave the side of the clutch master a very small amount. I thought it would be very stiff if I added a downward element on the firewall that bolts through the wall and connects to the pedal box, so the assembly cannot flex the wall. 
Of course, I think it's better than anything I could buy.  It was a fun project. I use all TR3 pedals and other factory bits.
I think the TR6 duel master is worth considering if it can be adapted to the TR3 parts. If I remember correctly, Jeff Snooks TR3 uses a TR6 master, which I think fits in the factory box.

Here's Jeff's setup.  I took this photo at Watkins Glen in 2008 for inspiration and ideas when I was beginning my build.  I'm not sure what master he uses.  It does not look like TR6, but it is a duel unit that uses the TR3 box and seems to protrude further into the firewall box.  This proves that it is possible to build something not too far outside of the standard TR3 setup and if it works for Jeff, it's well tested and performs as needed.

The dual brake master on Jeff?s car is from a GT6, as I recall, don?t know the exact one though.

Glen did a masterful job prepping the TR3 for Jeff.  So many small, and large, well thought out details.

 Thanks Terry, yes Jeffs is a GT-6, I think there are 2 dual circuit cylinders for that application, & I THINK it's the earlier of the 2 but I would have to go through my records to be sure.

 Another option, although it takes some fab work & a little injuneering, is what we did on Mike Jacksons car.As I recall it's a much modified Spit/GT-6 cylinder mount box/bracket, I've used them on several builds.It's hard to see but the (very long) clutch pushrod is just outboard of the rear brake pushrod, & the clutch master is mounted on a bracket behind the dash.

Having retired from racing after over 30 years I am liquidating some of the
assets associated with the adventures.

The below website was set up for me by Henry Frye and shows and lists

The motorhome is in excellent condition and is great especially when weather
is other than optimal on a race weekend. Having heat and air conditioning;
hot shower and a full kitchen made even the most dismal event much better.
It also gives options on long hauls to distant tracks where an overnight
rest is essential. It has a Ford drivetrain with a V-10 and has no problem
pulling a 24' fully loaded trailer(race car; ATV; tools; spares; canopy &
poles; etc.) Reasonable offers considered

 

Kawasaki 220 Bayou is in excellent condition. Reasonable offers considered

 

There is also a 24'x24' shelter with all the 1" EMT and fittings available.
This is large enough to cover two Triumphs as many of you have seen. It was
also a shelter when we had the gatherings of TR folks during a race weekend.
