Look for the final numbers soon. As we worked through the process, we gave a lot of thought on how to keep better track of the membership. We realized we need to do an annual roll call and clarify the process we use to add new members. While the "we don?t have any rules" thing has worked well for 25 years, we are tweaking the process we use to add members. This is pretty much how our self-policing group has been doing it, we just never put words to the process because we didn?t need to. And for the record, we are calling this a "guideline", not a rule! As opposed to the nomination process we have been using, we will use a "sponsorship" process going forward. First, we have the designations. All FOT members now fall into one of two categories. Drivers or Crew. Drivers are active and former drivers who turn (or have turned) the steering wheel in sanctioned competition in a Triumph or Triumph powered race car. Anyone not falling into that category will now be referred to as Crew. Only Drivers can sponsor new members. If the new member is an active or former driver, it's a done deal, we have a new FOT member. No seconds needed, we are counting on our existing Driver members to vet the new folks they sponsor. If a Driver wants to sponsor someone who is not another driver, i.e. become part of the FOT Crew, or someone who is actively on the path to becoming a driver in a Triumph they should submit that request to our membership committee through me. We think this clarification makes sense to keep our membership on point and strong. The FOT is proudly keeping Triumphs on track and relevant! We realized we need to do an annual roll call and clarify the process we use to add new members. While the "we don?t have any rules" thing has worked well for 25 years, we are tweaking the process we use to add members. This is pretty much how our self-policing group has been doing it, we just never put words to the process because we didn?t need to.? I just realized we lost Don six weeks ago on March 27, 2022. The last of the original Beady Eye gang. Sad. While the stories of the shenanigans Bill, Bob and Don got into are the stuff of legend, there is one story about Don I will never forget. More years ago that I care to admit, I am beginner racer who bought a derelict TR4 racecar and was trying desperately to figure out how to prepare it so it would finish weekends, and more importantly trying to figure out the art and science of race craft. I show up at Grattan for the first time, and I am not sure I can say I was struggling, but the Beady Eye boys thought I needed a primer on the track. VSCDA had a practice of doing lunch time parade laps at Grattan, so they cooked up the idea that I needed to get driven around the track by their resident hot shoe, Don Brick. Yes, Don was the fastest of the bunch. These parade laps were done in race cars, and the premise was the racers could put their family, friends, crew, etc. in the passenger seat to get a birds eye view of the track. No passing, just some leisurely laps. Apparently, Don didn?t get the memo... Don and I climb into his TR4, my memory is telling me we had no fire suits or helmets, and proceed to the false grid. We are waived onto the track, and Don nails it. We get decent speed for turn one, and Don is narrating. "This is where I usually have to brake, but since we are not at speed yet...", he brakes late, turns into 1 with tires at full chat. We slide around turn one, and on the little straight heading for 2, we come up on the first car doing parade lap speed, Don just passes them! At this point, Don is at racing speed, and he continues to narrate his way around the course passing everybody. As we round the corner for the start/finish straight, the flagger is waiting for us, and no surprise to me Don gets black flagged. As we are going down the straight for turn 1, I tell Don I don't think we are supposed to be going full tilt, everybody else is going much slower. Don was not deterred, he needed to show me his braking point for turn 1 at speed! We proceeded to do that second lap way too fast, then Don dutifully pulled into pit lane and was directed to the black flag station where he was given the stern warning that lunchtime parade laps were not to be driven at speed. Don's reply with a smile, "Oh, OK, I didn't know." Anybody else remember running with Don and watching his red wire wheels? Don insisted on running that same set of red painted wire wheels. He claimed he finally got a set of wheels that didn't break spokes, so he just kept running them. It was disconcerting to see Don in the seat sawing on the steering wheel, and you could see the hubs on the car moving with his motions, but the rim and tires couldn't keep up the hubs, you could almost see the spokes stretching with every turn of the steering wheel! Well, "working on" is a strong way of putting it. Little progress for some time, as I've been really, really distracted by racing the Spec Racer Ford since my Spit Racer met its demise. Dad took the old GT6 Mk I apart to change it over to a rotoflex car from a swing axle car. Great idea, but he started with a Mk III frame that I had lying around and even though it's really supposed to be pretty similar it's just not in some ways. So Tim Hutchisen's got a good GT6+ frame, which should be a better place to start. But it needs to get from Henry's place in Connecticut to my place in Wisconsin. Anybody heading in the right direction with room for a GT6 frame? Scott (B.) Choices, choices... Post break inspection in the paddock shows some weird stuff going on. The key itself only engaged into the crank sprocket for a length of about 3/16 to 1/4 inch. It is at this point where it sheared off. The crank is a NOS Moldex that was made probably 25 years ago. I installed it a couple of years ago, it probably has 3 race events on it. When I look at the location of the keyway in the Moldex crank and compare it to a stock Spitfire 1296 crank it looks like the keyway has been machined about 1/4 inch forward on the Moldex. I did not pay any attention to this upon assembly, never gave it a thought. This did not allow for enough engagement into the crank sprocket me thinks. My thoughts are to have a new keyway machined into the crank farther back. Has anybody else seen anything like this? But John is burying the lead here, driving a full enduro is tough. And when our resident octogenarian does it, that is beyond amazing! You are my hero, John! Our big bore group had a fantastic showing, pitting our TR4's, GT6's, TR250 and TR6 against some stiff competition from Germany, Italy, Japan and Britain. And some not so stiff competition in the form of a dozen or so Miatas! The weather played a part on Friday with us qualifying in the wet, somehow I qualified 4th. The first race put a pair of Miatas on the front row, as soon as the track dried a bit during the second half of the race they were dispatched with and it was the 250 and rainmiester Wheatley sitting on the front row for Saturday morning race. In the afternoon feature race, the leaders set a blistering pace by lapping all but 7 cars, and four of the cars on the lead lap were Triumphs! The TR250 prevailed in an entertaining battle with a the aforementioned 914, Mike Moore took third, Scott Janzen fourth, and Mark Wheatley sixth. Jason Sukey had a really strong run, as did Mike Kurtz who is doing a great job finding the feel for his TR6. One particularly interesting moment occurred late in the race when I experienced a traffic jam in the carousel. We were coming up through lapped traffic as we approached the carousel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBj-HbnjsF0 Spoiler alert, it has a happy ending. Triumph torque rules... My dad and I will have the gearbox out tonight and can check which version it is. It was hard to read the stamping while it was still attached. But we did confirm I broke it when we drained it last night and a bunch of large chucks of metal came out with the oil. Our preferred option for Thompson in June is to find another GT6 box to swap with, perhaps a little riskier since it will potentially have issues too unless previously gone through but that's our current plan. Thanks very much and I'll keep you posted. OD 5th wasn't much use to me in a GT6 that revs 7,500ish rpm- plus the TR6 close ratio (Sprint) gears are super attractive! Maybe someday the close ratio gearset will be back in stock at Rimmers and I'll get to try them....but till then, I'm loving the standard TR6 box in the racer. I've also been using a standard TR6 box in my street GT6 for a couple of decades with great results. If you put all the parts and pieces back together in the right location it is likely the adjustment of the lever and the solenoid. Check out the adjustment and vary the gap between the parts and see if you get engagement. good luck. The overdrive is not that complicated so look closely to what you have assembled.
