While better wear resistance is good, but I have had the tensioners break, rather than wear out. The chrome plating process can cause hydrogen embrittlement, which would make them more likely to break. Parts need to be baked after plating to provide hydrogen embrittlement relief. I don't know enough about the process with spring steel to know if the baking process at about 375 deg. F will weaken the spring? Joe B

Hi,
I saw on Facebook that Tony Lindsey-Dean got a bunch of timing chain tensioners hard chromed for wear resistance.
Seems like a good idea and (probably) what the factory did.
I've been a convert to cryogenic treatment for wear resistance on cams and tappets and highly recommend the effort. But I'm curios to see if anyone on this list has tried cryo for the timing chain tensioner...
Discuss.
