[Fot] Kastner Cup Tire Regulations

At the four K Cups I have attended, and raced at, you could run your car as eligible in your home club. When I was K Cup Race Chair in 2019 at Buttonwillow VARA made it clear from the start that if your car was legal in your club (tires and all) you would be allowed to run with us no questions asked. VARA even extended that to our run groups and if you won, you won, no exclusions for tires. This sounds like a sensible way to race the K Cup and it will not have an impact on who takes home the K Cup this year, tires and finishing place position have never dictated the winner.

Scott,
I’m not familiar with the US rules of racing.
On FIA racing they require period correct tires for vintage racing.
Means threaded tires for cars before 1972 and slicks for cars after that date.
There are certainly racing series who have their own rules and allow slicks or semis licks for older cars but this are special rules and not the historic correct FIA rules.
Now the problem:
In K-Cup competing cars of 3 decades 50ties, 60ties, 70ties and they all had different rules and different tires and brakes and modification regulations.
Means it is unfair by design as an old TR2 can’t hold up with a TR6 and a TR6 can’t compete with a prepped IMSA GTO TR8.
They’re all different animals on different modification levels and the outcome is for a good part predictable.
I’m only a guest in your and run what I get told. I don’t bother about tires. It just needs 4 wheels to make me happy, nothing else.
I don’t care about threads or not. I even drive on slicks in rain if necessary.
I don’t know if the tires are already ordered but if they’re slicks, we cut them to make them fitting the rules.
If that not helps, we put WD40 on to make them slick.
Cheers
Chris

tire rules are generally per the sponsoring club for the event, as I understand it. VRG (and PVGP, who I believe uses the VRG tire rules) have never allowed slicks, so they had to make an exception here. However, it’s not enforced, so cars have been seen that go through tech with treaded tires, which may end up being raced with other tires - just sayin! Tech is basically a safety process, not a rules enforcement - we are supposed to be self-policing. I think you’re seeing a pretty good reaction here because of the late timing of the announcement, and also because many of the Triumph racers at this event run a lot of races with VRG and other east coast clubs that require treaded tires. It really does put the cars on an unequal footing (no pun intended) and all other things being equal, the car on slicks will be significantly faster. We all know ways we could make our cars faster - wider wheels, spoilers, air dams, programmable ignition - but that’s not vintage.
I for one am glad to see other interesting Triumphs show up for the event, even if SCCA prepared - just factor the tires into who gets the awards. I personally feel that if you podium by 1-2 seconds a lap on slicks, you’ve lost your bragging rights.
Just my 2 cents.

Just a question.
When I was part of the K-Cup in 2013 and 2019 there were cars on slicks in the K-Cup race.
Has the rule been changed that slicks are not allowed anymore?

The way I read it, treaded slick racers are still competing for podiums during the K Cup races, but I could be mis-interpreting it.

Seems like a reasonable compromise to allow more people to race, while setting standards for who can podium.
Am I missing something on that angle?

Not good news for those of us who consistently run vintage, which typically requires treaded tires, and are not going to buy a set of R7s for this event.

Its good news that we have nearly 40 cars registered for the Kastner Cup this year (39 as of today). But it would be great to be at 40 or more for the 20th Kastner Cup!
I wanted to share news about tires that may have impacted some of our group that typically run on slick tires. PVGP has modified the "no slicks" rule for Triumphs. You can run grooved slick tires in the Kastner Cup. You can also run these tires in the regular run groups, but you will not be eligible for any awards for podium recognition. For those that don't have tire options this will certainly help.
So if you're on the fence about attending this year for whatever reason, please consider joining a huge 20th Kastner Cup at Pitt Race.
Regular entry fee is $595, plus $50 for the Kastner Cup. After July 1, the fee goes up to $645, so act now!
