[Fot] synthetic gear lube

P.J.

I know that a lot of people on FOT have had different experiences with lubricants and there is not one correct answer for all people. So I do not wish to imply that our way is the only way.

We have been testing oils for the last few years. We wanted to understand how different products and brands worked with our specific car.

We have removed all sythethic and semi-synthetic lubricants from our car.

We have switched back to very high quality conventional mineral based lubricants.

Some of the products we are using go back to things that we learned racing Porsche cars 35 years ago. Things that some of the foremost Porsche racing experts in the US shared with us over the years. These are people that support many racing winning cars all over the US. One is an engineer by trade. Our car is much happier with the conventional lubricants. We chose brands and products very carefully. We research the specs in detail and speak to the engineering departments of the companies that produce them.

Our findings are this, cars that were engineered and designed to run conventional mineral based oils sometimes prefer them. The tolerances and types of gaskets that were used when our cars were designed pre-date the use of synthetic oils in automobiles. Not to say that synthetics cannot work, however we are happier with our car running very high quality conventional lubricants. We have found that the additive packages and detergents in modern synthetic are too aggressive for our car. They were causing us more pains than benefits. We change the oils on a regular basis, so aggressive additive packages are not a big benefit for us.

A couple things to consider when choosing them:

1. Gear Oil - If you have a limited slip, make sure it has the correct additive package for the LS. If you still have brass in the gearbox or diff, make sure the oil does not exclude its use with brass. This is not as simple as just GL-4 or GL-5 specs. There are a lot of GL-5 spec oils that are safe with brass. The brass issue comes down to other additives. Read the label and check with the company that makes it.
2. Engine Oil - High ZDDP content is important

We just got done running pretty hard at BHF in very hot weather. As many as 4 sessions a day with only 15 minute breaks between some of them. Our car was very happy with the conventional products that are in it now. Temperatures of the motor and gearbox were down and shifting was very consistent throughout all sessions.

Just my experience and thoughts.

There are lots of advantages such as the differential running cooler etc. however the limited slip probably will not function as effectively. With regards to transmissions it has been my experience that with synthetic lube installed the syncros do not function as effectively and shifts will be slower, you’ll have to double clutch more then parts will fail.
