I have a set of the Goode Parts roller rockers in my TR-3.  They are very nicely
made pieces.? I originally helped him with the design, as I sent him some stock
ones to work from, so I am not entirely un-biased.

Richard Good at GoodParts makes set-ups for both cars.  Different ratios available.  I run them on my race car.  Beautiful pieces.  
TS Imported has a Harlan Sharp set-up, I believe.

 That sure would be trick in the TR engines, roller tappets, just like the old Land Rover engine...Not saying that it hasn't been done but not to my knowledge.

I think those are roller rockers, not roller lifters.? I do agree that 
the GoodParts roller rockers are good stuff.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no roller CAM out there for TR3/4/6.
I know there was interest a while back, maybe 15 years ago, but I don't think it ever panned out. Note that this was around the time that everyone started seeing cam and lifter failures due to issues including the oil composition.
But I know with TR6, there would be a lot of machine work to get a decent roller lifter in there... if you hear otherwise, we're all ears!

I remember looking a few years back and finding a Ford roller tappet that
was >.< *almost* the same size as the tappets for the TR6. ISTR it was just
a touch larger. The problem was they came in pairs that are linked
together, which didn't work in the TR6. Rollers at both ends of the pushrod
would be really nice.

Roller cams and lifters are not a panacea. They have some severe 
geometric limitations that no one seems to talk about. When I have tried 
to create a decent lift curve for our engines, I end up with a convex 
flank that cannot be ground with standard cam grinders. If I flatten the 
flank, I get a mild low lift cam.

Moving my shop and I have this British Frame and Engine M24-106 TR3/4 race cam for sale.  These were ground on original cams by Ken Gilanders.  The specs are in the attachment and cam card will be shipped with item.  This cam was used one season when I first started racing and it is excellent shape, you would just need new lifters. I am getting ready to install a set of 40 DCOE Webers on my 1600 CC Ford engine in my Morgan.? The Webers came with short (about 1 1/2 inches) velocity stacks.? Does anyone know of a good air filter set-up for these carbs?? I know most of your race cars probably run without filters, but this is a street car, and I would really like to have filters.? Thanks.

I went with a itg foam filter and minimal velocity stacks, basically 
just the lip to fit the front carb on the TR3. itg has a number of styles.

The TR3's inner wing panel is very close to the front edge of the front 
45DCOE mounted on a TWM manifold and I didn't want to cut the inner wing 
panel for additional clearance. The only way I could make it work was by 
going to a itg bolt on radiused inlet (13mm high) and one of the sausage 
shaped itg air filters. People with TR4s have space the TR3 doesn't and 
Morgan folks can just switch to a super sport bonnet.

The itg radiused inlet (which is just an air horn lip) and itg sausage 
shaped air filter was the only solution I could find to put an air 
filter on aTR3 with TWM manifold and 45DCOE and not cut up the inner 
wing panel. I didn't want to use a sock type filter because they create 
turbulence at the lip of the air horn.

The itg air filter I use, itg-JC40S-40 (fits TR2-4A engines with DCOEs)

I run an ITG filter on my dual DCOE setup on my street Spitfire.
It?s a large plenum chamber of filtered air to pull from.

While I like the look of the individual foam socks, I always felt that
if one of the socks clogged up more than the others it would
throw the balance off.

I have deep K&N air filters on my 40DCOE equipped TR7 Jack.  They've been on there for over 35 years now but I have to admit that I had to change the filters for new ones about 20 years ago.  I think all the backfiring when the tune of the engine wasn't so good rather burned out the originals.

For a brief glimpse of a TR3 at Watkins Glen back in the day, watch this video of the Watkins Glen story. TR is about 16 minutes in.

It looks like an EP race being filmed by a much faster car. But this race segment is only a very small portion of the whole thing.  Worth watching if you have a love of racing history. I like especially the interviews with Bill Milliken of Milliken?s corner.  He is the father of modern wheeled  vehicle stability and control.  Worked with Chuck Yeager on the X1 program.

 Thanks Phil.? I think that's my TR3 from back when Lou Gigliotti owned/drove it.? Right hand drive and I have seen pics of that paint scheme, and I still have those big flared fenders stored away (mine are still that big, but fiberglass).
There is also a Group 44 TR4 starting at about the 8:50 mark.

There have been a lot of very good posts covering generic application DCOE air filters. For your application, from what I can tell you will need to modify the bonnet to clear any kind of filter on a twin DCOE setup. 
Excuse my lack of familiarity, as I've only worked with Morgan +4s, but looking up images of both crossflow and non-crossflow Ford powered 4/4s it looks like you will have the same problem with clearance for the front filter. 
Not sure if this is helpful, but I would check clearance first, then if you do need a scoop, determine how much clearance that would give you. The Super Sports type scoop TeriAnn mentioned should give adequate clearance for most filters. If you choose a filter with a flat back plate, you can fit stub stacks inside the filter to smooth the inlet flow.

I am getting ready to install a set of 40 DCOE Webers on my 1600 CC Ford engine in my Morgan.? The Webers came with short (about 1 1/2 inches) velocity stacks.? Does anyone know of a good air filter set-up for these carbs?? I know most of your race cars probably run without filters, but this is a street car, and I would really like to have filters.? Thanks.

Well, my hopes for this little guy have not been working out (wanted to get
a group of youngsters together to wrench on it to put it together and
autocross it when done, so they could learn general automotive, wrenching,
discipline, car handling and competition skills), and it needs to go to its
next new home. Thank you so much to Jason (and Scott) for the opportunity,
but I will now pass it along gratis to the next person who would like to
take a stab at it. (Now I need to go find what I did with those log
books...)

It is located in central Ohio - please email me directly if you are
interested.

The poor unloved little beast!  This is a car with a lot of history here in the Midwest, raced long and hard with Midwestern Council and SCCA.  When I last saw it, it had a reasonable paint job on it and some updates to the roll bar.  When the roll bar was updated, the welder?s helper ?cleaned up? the original bar by cutting off the tab that had the SCCA number on it, but that could be replaced.

I?m presently (not) working on my dad?s GT6 racer, trying (not hard enough) to bring it back to the track, or I?d take it back and make it go again.

Jonas a fellow Spitfire racer, runs a multicolor?64 that was very quick at Roebling Road Raceway in Savannah this past weekend.  Jonas also used to race motorcycles in a past life!

It was nice to get together with the FOT racers and celebrate the Holidays!  John and Phil had a nice battle on the track w/ John keeping Phil at bay for quite a while, but Phil saw an opportrinity and got past John.  Here are the FOT group pictures from the VDCA Season Finale:

If anyone is interested in some winter racing way down south in the land of
cotton, our Texas club, CVAR, is holding a 3 day weekend at COTA, Fees are
$600, quite a bit cheaper than SVRA and a little more track time.  We are
sharing the venue with Track Addicts and we will have the track after
lunch all 3 days.  That equated to better weather this past year. We are
also able to rent garage spaces. The 4 car garage, which holds 6 Triumphs
is $1200 or $200 each.  Please let me know if you have any questions or if
you would like to join us. We are expecting at least 5 Texas Triumphs.

I know that trailering in the snow is not an option but with proper
planning and friends with spare bedrooms (me for example) we can plan
around the weather.

The Osthoff Inn is awesome.  The nightly cost does seem to be twice what it was in 2013.  I think it was around $200 for a two bedroom suite, maybe that was the split price per room.  In any case the amenities are unbeatable.  Super clean and very comfortable.  First class.  The lounge and restaurants are excellent and It's walking distance to town.  It's right on the lake shore with nice views.  Race and street car shows are held on the grounds as well as award celebrations.  It's worth the splurge if you don't get to travel often.

Hi Everyone. That's why I paid $795 at Indy 8 years ago; once was worth 
it. In spades.

Now running, biking, doing triathlons, and downhill skiing. Almost 
joined the National Ski Patrol again but had a couple health issues this 
summer. All is good now.

Gosh as I look further, $780 seems like a bargain when compared to SVRA Mid Ohio, Atlanta and VIR @ $825 each, but then there's that 22 hours to cover the 1200 miles to get there and back, + motel + car transport fees etc, etc, etc,  or air fare + rental car.  Still thinking on this one.

Good evening, everyone.

I hope you are all doing well and your plans for next season are coming together.  I wanted to reach out before the holidays to check in about next year's Cup race.  First - thanks to those of you that have registered so far.  We have 14 entries so far with most of them coming in from outside of the Midwest.  That's very encouraging - thanks!  

So we're six and a half months out still but early registration helps us with planning.  Just as a reminder, here's the link to register:

All Triumph entries are automatically entered in the Kastner Cup so there is no extra box to check there.  We will be setting up in the North Paddock inside of Turn 14.  There is a section of the registration that asks for your paddock preference.  Please select North Paddock / Triumph Race Paddock.  Road America is letting us organize the Triumph paddock parking ourselves.  We will have enough room to accommodate whatever you are towing with including RVs and larger rigs.  After the first of the year, we are going to start following up with registered drivers to get some information from each of you to use in a Kastner Cup event guide that we'll be putting together. 

Also, as previously mentioned, for those of you attending with your street car we will have a Triumph car Corral on a paved spot inside the paddock close to where we'll have the race cars set up.  Here is a map showing both the car corral location relative to the comp paddock.




We should have the Kastner Cup artwork in the next few weeks and will work on getting posters and other accoutrement (bonus points for a fancy word) together so that we can continue on with fundraiser efforts. If you have any questions whatsoever please feel free to reach out.  As I type this it's -10 degrees outside so July feels a long way off but I know it is going to be here before we know it. In 1964 at the the SCCA June Sprints, Jim Spencer won the D Production Championship with a track record of 2:59.300.

Jim Spencer took one of Kas KASTNER?s three Sebring TR4s from 1963, removed the Surrey Top, and ran it the 1964 Season. Could this 1963 TR4 from Sebring be the one that Keith Files owns? Number 38 Sebring TR4 also won the Kastner Cup at Topeka. Then a hard fought 2nd at Goodwood after having a pole position.

Keith is monitoring the shipping costs to bring it to Road America. Not looking good at this time.   

What an appearance that would be!   Much could be made out of this.

(I was at Road America in 1964 and was painfully unaware)

Didn?t Kas say that both the 37 & 38 went to Spencer originally?

He didn?t know what happened after that. Obviously, the 38 car resurfaced. The 36 car that went to Tullius is lost to the mists of time.

But what about that 37 car?

RV camping in the paddock motorhome parking, no facilities, is a $90 add on.
Shawn, we're trying to put together a Historic Race Group team paddock
within the K cup space. The Gott's cars should be there with my camper and
Bob Lang trailer. Feel free to pull up a piece of blacktop with us.

When I was at RA for the Runoffs, sites at the track were hard to come by.
I stayed at Plymouth Rock Camping Resort across the street. Unfortunately,
being September and during the peak of Covid, many of the amenities were
closed. What was available was very nice.

In the last few years, RA has done a lot to increase the available parking/camping areas.  The paved upper paddock, up the hill, west of the south paddock and scales building, is now much larger and with great electrical service if that?s what you need.  The whole area southwest of what was St. John?s food shack is now paved.  And there are new food shacks and bathroom facilities down there too.  And west of that, on the way from the main paddock to the Sargento bridge, there are big new paved paddock spaces on the west side of the road, big enough for a very large rig (with no electrical connection so far as I can recall).

This is all at the other end of the paddock from the Lester garages ? way up the hill on the south end.

The only one I can think of is Huffaker Engineering at Sonoma Raceway.  
They are know for their race car building, but they have decades of experience with British manufacturers.  There is also a shop in Campbell, British Motorsports.  Huffaker would be the better choice, but probably twice the price.

What are your goals for the engine rebuild?  Is it a race or street engine?  
I would not recommend Champion Engines in Campbell.  He does not assemble engines.  Only machine work and not to a very high standard, although I'm sure he is capable.  He seems to have at least one foot well into retirement.

Yes, Greg is still working wonders at his business and very busy.  He would of course be my first choice for a British car expert, but even further away from San Fran than the San Jose area in Santa Cruz.  
It would help to know more about Steve's particular needs...starting with the make of British cars.
