dont forget, a f good part of the "syncro problem" in all these gearboxes
is worn out mating outer sleeves, gear tapers and dog teeth
the "big" gearbox in TR's, Salons & Stags all have much the same issue, and
you might find an even bigger application/market there
Most of the repro syncros ive seen for the "big" box are worse than worn
out factory ones. The most common problems ive enountereed are wrong brass
used for the backing, wrong cone angle and wrong dog teeth shape, with a
few even being badly out of round, so doomed to failure.
whilst ive not been doing such repairs commercially for a few years now, at
the end of my triumph gearbox building career, we were dismantling dozens
of old gearboxes just to raid 1st and 4th syncro rings and move them into
other boxes needing 2nd and 3rd. this was better than the new ones on offer
at the time from vendors like Moss, Rimmers etc and even some of the UK's
specialist transmission parts suppliers (basically, the people making them).
ive had a fair bit of recent experience with coated syncro rings in late
model Toyota gearboxes in race applications. . The factory coating has gone
thru several iterations , some of them not very good at all, so caution on
this front also.
our race Lotus has syncros supplied by a US firm
https://synchrotech-transmissions.com/carbon-synchros
keep us all informed please. US$75 is not unexpected or unreasonable for a
boutique order, if they actually work!. The Toyota gearbox
"carbon" syncros currenty retail for about US$45-$50 ea
