If you want one that is tolerant of imperfect block / head / liner
protrusion,
Cometic part numberH0793SP4059F has worked best for me.
Payen AE-330 composite used to be my go-to, but they changed hands and I
changed liners and that didn't work for me anymore.
This is an 0.059" thick, 91 mm bore gasket with round fire rings, but
you need 91 mm bore even if your liners are smaller than that (mine are)
due to the diameter of the hole in the head if you've milled ANYTHING
off of it and opened up the intake pocket. They make a thinner gasket
and a 88 mm one, but the 88mm fire ring outer edge is inside the intake
pocket on my head which has only been milled, no additional intake
pocket relief ground. Even at 91mm I have a little bit of the fire ring
protruding into the combustion chamber. I've not had it burn through -
but the longest it stays on the engine is maybe a dozen races.
If you have perfect block / head / liner protrusion, one of the solid
gaskets (either steel shim or one of Mordy's awesome copper gaskets -
gasketworks.com) will give you a bit more compression and you can make
sure none of it protrudes into the combustion chamber. We tried various
solid gaskets on Jack's engines and always ended up blowing a head
gasket and changing to a Payen AE-330 at the track. We eventually just
put the composite gasket in to begin with and stopped having to do
that. We got pretty good at it though - I think we had it down to about
1.5 hours.
