I always used Valvoline straight 50 Wt. oil in my overdrive gearboxes for the race car. Worked fine - no wear problems. However, in my street cars I use EP-80/90 gear oil, as recommended by the manufacturer (I think).

I mentioned Zinc content in GL-4 and GL-5 oil, that's wrong of course, it's about Sulfur. Sulfur is also reactive to Nikasil. Some cars in the eighties had Nikasil liners : Honda, Jaguar, Rover, and also Porsche. But the high sulfur content in the FUEL of that period did damage the Nikasil liners, thus causing severe loss of power and high oil consumption. The sulfur content of modern fuels is very low and it isn't harmful to Nikasil anymore. However, car manufacturers have changed to other production processes to reduce ring/liner friction, because of these problems but also because Nikasil is expensive for massproduction.MarcelVan: "van mulders marcel" <van.mulders.marcel at telenet.be>

I believe most Triumph owners agree that engine oil can safely be used in the gearbox wether or not it has an overdrive. For some time I use Mobil 1 5w-50.There is some concern about the Zinc content in GL5 EP (extrem pressure) diff oil. GL5 oil has about twice as much Zinc in it compared to GL4 (so will GL 4 oil also eat the yellow parts, but only 2x slower?)Marcel

AmiciI am running a TR4 with an overdrive. There seems to be several opinions on the proper lube to run in these transmissions. Is there a consensus on what works best in racing applications?Russ Westfall
