[Fot] Dif. noise

well, there is the "ignore it" approach. If you have a spare diff or three, no big deal - you could drive 'til it craps out, though at that point a rebuild is probably out of the question!
Back in the old days in Pittsburgh, when I got a $200 car every winter to drive through the ice, salt and potholes, there was no maintenance, as long as it started. Of course, that’s because I was preserving my sports car in the garage.

Thanks for the replies. (Some of you :)
I was pretty much planning to pull it apart again but was hoping someone would humor me into not worrying about it ..

You can’t really “pull the cover” on a Spit/GT6 diff, but it’s easy enough to drop the whole diff and much easier to examine on the bench.

Pat;
If it's a stock set up from the factory, my first suspicion would be one of the differential carrier bearings. That is, if you are certain it is from the differential. Wheel bearings can be checked by pitching the car side to side (no traffic, wide open parking lot) to change the loading and hence the level of whine.
But Bob is right: check it out NOW. The cover and perhaps the carrier should be pulled and a visual inspection made. Look for pitting on the bearings and gear teeth, check the pattern (before pulling the carrier) with Bluing Compound (or, lacking that, bright colored paint)
Hopefully it's just a bearing,
Phil Gott

CHECK IT BEFORE YOU DESTROY IT.
Whining is because the gears aren't meshing properly. This will result in premature wear if you're lucky. If you are not lucky, you'll overheat the diff and / or otherwise destroy it. Sometimes the noise can be from something really dumb, like the ring gear bolts backing out and you find out when one of the bolts wedge in the diff case with the resulting damage to everything. Not that I've done that or anything.
And keep in mind that scrap steel prices are "fairly low".

Bob Lang

Hi All.
I am hearing some whining going on behind me when driving my 68 GT6..
It is only at neutral acceleration/deceleration and above 40 MPH ( There is no whine when accelerating or decelerating). Stock 3.27:1 rear end.
Any thoughts ?
Thanks Pat
