Walt, I suppose you mean the Formula 1 track. Just near the formula I track, there is also the famous Nordschleife, a closed track of about 20km! On the Nordscheife, you can do one or more laps with your own car. You only have to check in, I believe without any preparation. 
In 2011, with the Triumph Competition championship, we had a 3 hour race on the Nordschleife + the Formule 1 Nurburgring : together 25km : a lot of curves to learn and memorise. It was on this occasion that Kas Kastner was invited by Chris Marx and a special Cup was handed by Kas to driver Mario Neumann.

Last fall I visited the Nurburgring. I watched a sedan race and walked around most of the track. I’m taking another trip to Germany this August and I wish to 

Drive some fairly quick laps on this track. Nothing crazy. Do any FOT members have any experience with one of the track schools where you atend a classroom, ride as a passenger then get behind the wheel for some laps? I can search the computer but I thought I’d as my FOT members if they had any experience and had a recommendation.
