Mike...
Great point. Many years ago when I first started Vintage Racing, the tracks were 'forgiving'. If you made a mistake, you spun off mowing the lawn or creating a dust cloud. The only penalty was embarrassment. I'll never forget then one first spring event I showed up for at Road America and it was like I was in a street race, surrounded by Century Link Fencing.
I was told that as far as Road America was concerned CART had demanded it. CART was afraid one of their cars would leap the cement barriers/snow fencing and crash into the crowd.
No question that was a potential issue. The change was a good idea...but drivers like me (prone to make errors) missed those 'forgiving' tracks.

You guys have a lot of nothing down there, sure makes it easier to avoid stuff. At Watkins Glen, with the guardrails about one car width off the track, it's more like" If you spin, they're towing you in"

Whenever you start to spin it’s two feet in. I’ve been in a few situations where other drivers have tried to save a spin by not following this advice and they always come rolling across the track backwards following an unpredictable path usually collecting a few unsuspecting racers along the way. Always go two feet in.
