[Fot] Diff lube

In 17 years racing I had a share of (limited slip) differential problems of course, but I couldn't blame the oil. I used some blands and in the end I decided for Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W-140 for Salisbury type limited slip devices because this oil promises to cause less friction. It is recommended for BMW LS diffs and NissanGTR. When it is good enough for them, it must be good enough for our Triumphs. Although this oil is to GL5 specification, I wonder if this is a reason not to use it. GL5 and GL4 oils have the same sort of additives, only GL5 has the 'bad' additives in a higher concentration than GL4. And also, the salisbury (quaife) limited slip parts are all steel I believe?

It’s a good idea to use a different color lube in the gearbox from the diff. That way you can see what’s leakin’

Hi - if you are running a Quaife, the Redline should be okay. The only reason it would not be okay would be if you were still running the stock differential center section which has brass / bronze (aka "yellow metal") parts. The shockproof stuff is API GL5 and that will eat the yellow metal. But the Quaife internals are all steel, so GL5 should not be a problem.
As a point of reference and pertaining to the question, I've been mostly using Mobil 1 75w140. I would also recommend using the higher numbered oil 75w-140 vs 75w-90 because the differential runs very hot and I think the 75w-90 would be working out of temp range.

To all FOT guys (and gals)- Can you tell me what type of rear diff lube you are using with a Quaife LSD set up?- Otherwise stock GT6 rear. I was using Redline Light Weight Shockproof oil but I have heard that's not good. Thanks!- Jay De Pol
