[Fot] Fwd: Broken Diffs

For what it's worth:
Comparison of a welded diff with a Quaff;
I've been running a welded Diff "forever." No problems.  But recently had an opportunity to compare it with a Quaiffe.
Recently my son (Dave Gott) got a TR4 (Bill Throop's car) and installed a Quaife in it.  We were running nose to tail at Thompson and we observed that:
1.  the Quaffe did allow inside wheel spin and hence no power to the outside on VERY tight turns (turn 4 especially).2. the Welded diff caused the rear to kick out upon application of power in the two right handers prior to the straight due to power induced increased slip angle.  Therefore, I had to feather the throttle to keep the car from oversteering and looping.3. In those same two corners, the Quaiffe enabled early application of the throttle and gained on the TR with the welded diff in those corners even though the TR with the welded diff had much more power.
So with respect to these two approaches it's not a case of one being overall better than the other, but a case of the right diff for each track.

And they sure do work.
Every once in a while at GRATTAN, going through the off camber Turn 3, it would grab and CLUNK like the whole rear end fell out.  I thought it might have broken, but turns out that was well within its character.

The Comp. Dept for Triumph paid for the tooling for that diff "No Spin" which later was called the Detroit locker. I remember well arguing with the people on how units would every be ordered  and a guarantee etc. I know one thing though, at the end of the conversation and after a few weeks we had made a limited slip available for the Triumph racers.

"Lincoln Locker" and "Detroit Locker"  synonymous?  I was told mine were "Detroit Lockers", but I had a owner's manual that was called "NO SPIN"
