[Fot] Broken Diffs

Hi - Thanks for all the input. I have a few cores and I've been poking around my parts to see if I have other bits to put things back together. I think I can save the TranX, I will get it checked for cracks, just to be sure.

Regarding limited slip vs. locked - the TranX is by far the best one for MY driving style that I've tried. FWIW, I have three Quaifes, I like them - they reward smooth - but I hate them coming out of tight stuff. Inside Wheel Spin City

Regarding welded stock diffs, it turns out that stock center sections are getting harder to find because folks wait 'till "too late" to send 'em for rebuilds and a lot of them have one or both carrier bearings spun and the bearings are no longer "interference fit". A lot of these are getting junked according to my small circle of Triumph nuts.

My ultimate goal is to have 3.45, 3.70, 4.10 and 4.33 available with Salisbury-type limited slips in them. That helps me gear for various tracks. Seems like my pick for PittRace was more or less on target. ;-)

 Hi Brian,
The answer is approximately 20% in both cases.

Happy thanksgiving all. Curious what is the HP loss from the flywheel to the wheels. IE what does 292 at the fly equivalent at the wheels?

I took it as Keith was throwing those numbers out there to give us an idea as to how much power the LSDs can handle. Thanks Keith, it was helpful info. FYI I use Lincoln Lockers in my TR6. I won’t post dyno sheets because my HP/Talent ratio is too high!

Any of you blokes that claim HP numbers need to attach the dyno sheet.

Hi Bob,
i am pretty sure that Tran X is the same as a Salisbury LSD and is still available through TR Enterprises here in the UK.
I do not know what car you are using (TR4 i think) so a new Tran X is probably ok. I have 2 Salisbury LSD units in 2 axles for my TR4.
However, if you are running a TR6 then I would recommend a Gripper LSD as they can handle the extra power and need a lot less maintenance than the Salisbury (I swapped out and sold both my Salisbury LSDs for 2 new Grippers for my TR6).

Of interest my TR4 produces 194 bhp at the flywheel and my TR6 produces 252 bhp at the flywheel.
Hope that helps,
Keith

Should be a lot of used carriers around?

 Hi,
I broke a diff at Thompson back in October and I finally did a post-mortem. Looks like a couple of bolts backed out and when the shit hit the fan, the 4 or 5 that were still holding on sheared off. In any case, lots of metal bits in there. Some of the big pieces bounced around in the diff and there's some gouges in the Tran-X center section. The question to the group is - assuming that I find no cracks in the center section, it it accepted practice to clean off the dings to prevent stress risers and re-use it or is this a "tosser".
Speaking of Tran-X, does anyone sell those now or are we limited to Quaife and GKN? I see that Rimmer lists both of those units. To be honest, I'm not a fan of Quaife because I have to run the rear a lot softer to prevent wheel spin in the tight stuff - that kills my times at places like Thompson and Palmer (like 1.5 to 2 seconds a lap.) Speaking of GKN, I know nothing about them other than "clutch type differential". Feel free to chime in if you have experience with those units.

Also, I am nearly 100% certain that I was using new lock washers and Red Loctite high strength thread compound, so the bolts backing out was a total surprise when I cracked the case open. I was assuming that the pinion head had sheared off based on how the car felt when the diff broke. It was BANG and done - box full of neutrals.
Off topic - looks like I'm not driving at ButtonWillow, I got a reply from Joe Siam that he has nothing available for that date. Oh well. Look like my budget is going to gears and stuff anyway... ;-)
